MLK Semi-Finals Report

Game 1: Manassas vs White Station
















White Station's Kaitlin Murphy started the game the way she left off in the quarterfinal by hitting the first points of the game. She had help from Chetavia Rutherford dropping off two 3s in the first quarter. Manassas had great offensive movement but just could not convert it into buckets. The first quarter score was 18-3.

Manassas' Desiree Phillips struggled in the first half. She tried shooting 3s. Nothing. She tried pull up jump shots. Nothing. Despite her scoreless half, she continued to direct and lead her team.

Halftime Score: White Station- 28 Manassas-9

During the first seconds of the second half, Desiree got her first 2 points. But White Station was just too much. Winning the game 57-25. Kaitlin Murphy finished with 17 points.


Game 2: Millington vs Melrose
















Millington's Jasmine Newsome started the game off with a 3 at the top of the key. They tried to put full court pressure on Melrose. However, Melrose continuously broke the press. Finishing the quarter tied at 14.

During the second quarter, Melrose took their time on offense running a motion set. Lawanda Clayborn seemed to get layup after layup helping Melrose go up on Millington by 4. Millington came back with a run of their own and went into halftime again tied at 26.
















It took almost 3 minutes into the second half before either team scored with LaTesa McLaughlin hitting a free throw. Melrose was hurt by turnovers including 8 steals from Millington. Millingon took advantage of the turnovers ending the 3rd quarter with a score fo 38-30.

Melrose had outrebounded Millington 29-21 but Millington rebounded when it counted, especially on the offensive end late in the 4th quarter. ESPN RISE 31st ranked (Fab 50), Millington escapes upset 46-42. Jasmine Newsome led Millington with 15 points. LaWanda Claborn had 14 for Melrose.
