Millington Lady Trojan defense keys Dragon Fire title

Millington used a dominating defensive performance, and a star performance from one of their role players to pull away from pesky St. Benedict at Auburndale, 51-37, Tuesday night, and claim a second straight Dragon Fire Invitational championship at Collierville.

Michele Brown, a 5-11 senior who had been quiet in the early season, stepped up for 14 points to lead the Lady Trojans (15-2) and take Tournament MVP honors.

Central at Tournament of Champions Game 3 Report

From Central's Head Coach site, coachbray.net

The Lady Warriors bounced back Tuesday morning to beat Country Day (La Jolla, CA) 56-52 to earn third place in the Red Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions. Memphis Central was led by senior Jasmine Taylor with 18 points followed by freshmen Aaliyah Whiteside and Danielle Ballard who each scored 13 points. The Lady Torros of Country Day did a great job on senior Jamila Ajanaku, holding her scoreless in the first half and just 8 points for the game. Erica Burgess and Malaika Moore each chipped in 2 points. After missing 10 free throws in their loss to #12 Whitney Young, the Lady Warriors stepped to the line against Country Day and shot 100% making 7 out of 7 free throws. Freshman Aaliyah Whiteside was 4 of 4 from the free throw line and Danielle Ballard was 3 of 3. The Lady Warriors, now 12-1, return to action Tuesday, January 5th at Melrose High School at 6:00 pm.

Millington vs St. Benedict- Dragon Fire Championship Report

Millington and St. Benedict faced off for the Collierville High Dragon Fire Invitational 2008 Tournament Championship. It started off sloppy with both teams committing turnovers on their first possessions. Symone Daniels scored the first 2 points of the game for St. Benedict and was on fire throughout the first quarter scoring 9 points. Latesa McLaughlin held it down for Millington scoring 10 in the first including 2 three pointers. The first quarter ended tied 16.

Neither team was able to score until the 5:15 mark in the second quarter. The defense was relentless by both squads. And St. Benedict made sure someone was always glued to Jasmine Newsome of Millington. During the first half, St. Benedict had already went 13 players deep in their rotation. At halftime, Millington led 23-22.

Symone Daniels (21), Sophomore Post St. Benedict

Michelle Brown, Senior Post, Millington

Early in the third quarter, Millington's Tamarah Brandon committed her 4th foul and had to sit down forcing Millington to go to their bench. Junior Deanna Jeffries and 6'3 sophomore Misha Jones came in and gave some valuable minutes. Inspite of the foul trouble, Millington turned up the defensive heat and St. Benedict had a couple of costly mental lapses helping Millington to increase the lead. End of Third Quarter 35-30 Millington.

Fourth quarter was all Millington winning the game 51-37.

Central-Whitney Cooper Report on Hoopgurlz

image from ESPN Hoopgulz.com

The game of the day was the Whitney Young-Memphis Central showdown, easily. Whitney Young, ranked No. 12 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50, went down eight in the first quarter then stormed back to take a two-point lead into halftime. It was similar to two great heavyweight boxers going at it. Memphis Central smacked Whitney Young in the mouth with its 17-9 first quarter. The Dolphins responded with an uppercut counterpunch that was a 15-5 second period.

St. Benedict gets semifinal win in Dragon Fire Invitational

St. Benedict 65, Clarksville Northeast 49

“They’re sitting in that locker room,” St. Benedict girls basketball coach Don Sebren said with a laugh, “thinking of what they’re going to say about this game on their Facebook pages.”
The Division 2-AA Eagles surely have a story to tell after staring down University of Tennessee signee Kamiko Williams and Clarksville Northeast Monday night, scoring a 65-49 victory in the semifinals of the Dragon Fire Invitational at Collierville.

Millington vs Houston in Collierville Dragon Fire Report

In the opening tip off of the game, Houston got the ball and Sarah Watkins went on a shooting spree scoring 8 of the team's 10 first quarter points including 4 rebounds. Millington started off slow and didn't get their first point of the game until the 5 minute mark, when Latesa McLaughlin hit a freethrow making the score 6-1. Millington's Michelle Brown contributed in a big way in the first assisting McLaughlin with points by scoring 6 and grabbing 4 rebounds.

1st quarter: Houston 10 Millington 7

In the second quarter, Houston for some reason stopped feeding the ball to Watkins and Millington went to work behind 11 second quarter points from Jasmine Newsome including 3 for 5 shooting from behind the arch. Ending the half 26-20.

During the first half, Millington ran a zone which pretty much matched up their shorter guards against Sarah Watkins. In the second, Ashley Robinson had the role of mirroring Sarah and she gave Watkins problems. Houston only score 6 points in the third. All by Sarah Watkins with 4 coming from the freethrow line. Millington went up by 10 with a score of 36-26.

During the fourth, Houston went on a run cutting the lead to 3. The advantage seem to go Houston's way especially after 3 questionable charges called against Millington. However, the veteran squad pulled it out. Millington wins 46-41.

Millington's top scorers were Jasmine Newsome with 18 and Michelle Brown with 12 points 9 rebounds. Sarah Watkins for Houston had 21 points 9 rebounds.

Millington jumps to 20

Due to some major tournaments, matchups and upsets last week, Millington jumped from 26 to 20 on the December 24, 2008 released ESPN Fab 50 national ranking. Several non ranked teams jumped into the Fab 50 due to their performance at the Tournament of Champions event in Phoenix, AZ. Central is participating in the event's second session. If they continue to play well in the tournament, they may enter the Fab 50 also.

Millington girls top Fairley in Collierville Tournament

On paper, Fairley had the speed, and Millington had the size. But the only reason the Lady Trojans came away with a 42-30 opening-round victory in the Dragon Fire Invitational at Collierville on Saturday was that they have a speedy backcourt to go with that size.

Ridgeway vs Overton Report at Larry Finch Classic

On December 2nd, Overton went to Ridgeway and crushed them 69-56. Round 2 would be December 20th on neutral ground at the University of Memphis Fieldhouse.

Terry Offiong, Senior Ridgeway and Orlandria Williams, Junior Overton

If you keep up with Ridgeway, you already know that they are going to full court press. However during the 1st quarter, it did not effect Overton. So coming out in the second quarter Ridgeway changed it up and went zone. Plus intensified the press. This did get to Overton and Ridgeway went up by as much as 8. Finishing the half up 26-18

Adrian Sanders, Junior, and Ashley Tate, Senior

In the fourth quarter, Overton tried to make a comeback outscoring Ridgeway 19-9 in the quarter but it wasn't enough. Ridgeway wins round 2 55-49. Ridgeway was lead by Hasina Muhammad with 18 points. Jasmine Robinson 17 points lead Overton.

Germantown vs Snowden Report

Germantown vs Snowden was a great matchup for middle school ball during the Holiday Classic at John P. Freeman.

This game was close throughout but started to go Snowden way towards the end of the 3rd quarter. However, Germantown did not quit and went on a run at the end but finished short of pulling out the victory.

End of 1st quarter tied 8. End of 2nd 13-14 Snowden. End of 3rd 18-22 Snowden. Final score 32-35 Snowden.

If you keep up with middle school basketball, seventh grader Tia Wooten should ring a bell. However Snowden and Germantown displayed some other very talented young ladies during this game.

Tia Wooten, Snowden, All around player, very athletic, rebounds, handles the ball, shooter, can get out of control at times, but that is expected from a 7th grader

Kaylan Parks, Germantown, A beast on the block and boards, has a nice touch on her shot

Jessica Baker, Germantown, I haven't been to many middle school games, but this young lady is one of the best pure shooters I have seen.

Janeka Williams, Snowden, I love her game. She always seem to be around the basketball, can shoot the three, but will also slash and penetrate to the basket and does not mind going left.

Brianna Mitchell, Germantown, is a legit point guard but also has the ability to score off penetration or behind the arch. Is a floor general

So when her Lady Warriors, ranked No. 1 in the Dandy Dozen, entered the locker room at the halftime deadlocked at 27-all with West Memphis Saturday night in the Blue Devil Classic, Bray and her staff cut straight to the point with their players.

MLK Quarter-Finals Report

Game 1 East vs White Station

Candis Clear with the ball

Adrienne Pratcher

This game started off a little slow with both teams taking their times to run thru their offenses. Chi Chi Okwumabua of White Station scored the first basket of the game with a nice post move into a jump shot. East was scoreless the first 2 minutes of the game until a free throw by Adrienne Pratcher.

Into the second quarter, East had a lot of turnovers and unforced errors. White Station converted them into buckets and went into halftime with a 17 point lead 36-19

Chi Chi Okwumabua

Kaitlin Murphy

East came out in the second with full court pressure. It resulted into a run for East behind 2 three pointers from Candis Clear. However, White Station countered East's run with one of their own and ended the 3rd quarter, 53-34.

East continued to struggle with putting the ball in the basket during the fourth quarter but Kaitlin Murphy of White Station did not. She finished the game with 20 points and helped White Station to a 70-46 victory.

Game 2: Millington vs Liberty

Misha Jones and Jasmine Newsome

Millington was just too much for Liberty. LaTesa McLaughlin started the domination in the first quarter with 3 three pointers and 4 steals building a 15-3 lead. It was never close. Millington won 56-34.

Game 3: Overton vs Melrose

This was the highly anticipated matchup. It started out very uptempo with both teams feeling each other out. The very first points of the game came late in the quarter and ended 6-2 Melrose.

From there Melrose spreaded the floor and took advantage of their quickness getting to the rack at ease. If Melrose was not taking it to the basket, Teneisha Lurry took care of business at the 3 point line hitting 2 in the second quarter.

Halftime: Melrose 26 Overton 20

Kyeshia Vinson (Melrose) and Cortrice Golden (Overton)

Melrose made a run coming out of halftime and increased the lead to 12 with a third quarter score of 39-27.
