Overton girls claims 15-AAA title

Overton's Philecia Atkins (left), who finished with 11 points, battles Southwind's Jasmine McAllister for a loose ball.

They had to dance, improvise and hustle like mad, but Overton's girls finally laid what's quickly becoming the same old tune on rival Southwind, escaping with a 44-43 home win Tuesday night to clinch the District 15-AAA regular-season title.

Syracuse-bound Cornelia Fondren scored 14 points, and was a constant energy source for the Wolverines (18-2, 11-1). Sophomore Philecia Atkins added 11 despite outside shooting struggles. But it was UT-Martin signee Cortrice Golden who came off the bench with six of her 10 points in the final quarter and two big plays down the stretch.

"I'm just trying to see what teams are doing, come in and slow things down," said Golden, who had back-to-back baskets on pretty inside moves to put the Wolverines on top for good, 43-41.

Senior Bianca Cage, coming off a 48-point game with a state-record 13 3-pointers last Friday against Kirby, led the Jaguars (23-5, 9-3) with 23 points.
