Center Hill 50, Hernando 41: The Lady Mustangs’ Class 5A coming-out-party continued with a district title Friday night.
Center Hill (24-3), which spent the previous four seasons in Class 4A, extended its 1-5A undefeated streak to eight games by overcoming a 25-24 halftime deficit and outscoring the Lady Tigers, 26-16, in the second half.
Senior combo guard Jasmine Golden registered a team-high 16 points before fouling out with 15.8 seconds remaining in the fourth and was the lone player to score in double figures for the Lady Mustangs.
Center Hill, who clinched their fourth consecutive playoff berth, will host Region 3-5A runner-up Starkville in Monday’s opening round of the North Half State Tournament at 7 p.m.
Arica Wallace’s 16 points led Hernando, which also advanced to the playoffs and will travel Monday to Canton.
“It was a hard win,” Golden said. “We struggled, but we got over it. We played hard for it. I was a little nervous, being in this new classification.”
In Region 1-6A
Southaven won the girls region title and improved to 27-1 on the year by beating Horn Lake, 56-46. Olivia Cunningham scored 14 to lead a balanced Southaven attack. The Chargers will host Warren Central on Monday in the North Half playoffs, while Horn Lake will play at Greenville.
