Southwind blows into Dragon Fire semis

article from CommercialAppeal.com

There was a five-minute run where Southwind was playing exactly how first-year coach Stan Gatlin wants. After that, there were stops, starts, fits, bad spells and foul calls. Lots of foul calls.

But while the Jaguars coach calls his new team "still a work in progress" it managed to work over a scrappy FCA squad, 58-44, in the Dragon Fire Invitational girls tournament quarterfinals Wednesday at Collierville.

The Jaguars (13-2) will play Jonesboro (7-4) tonight in a 6 p.m. semifinal. The nightcap will pit Bartlett (6-5) against Manassas (12-2).

Midway through the second quarter, Southwind tore open an 11-10 game with a 20-0 run. Three times sophomore point guard Amber Holmes found 6-foot senior center Jasmine McCallister inside for baskets -- two of which resulted in fouls and three-point plays. Senior guard Bianca Cage added four of her team-high 17 points and Southwind had things under control.

Collierville triumphs over Byhalia in Dragon Fire Invitational opener

story from CommercialAppeal.com

A young Collierville squad gave themselves, and coach Bobby Yates, a nice after-Christmas gift Tuesday, riding an 18-point, 22-rebound performance by 6-2 sophomore center Jessica Brown to a 56-48 decision over speedy Byhalia in the opening round of the Dragon Fire Invitational.

Nice, but nowhere near the gift Yates knows he has been given just by being back in his old routine as the weeklong marathon starts anew.

"It was a year ago during this tournament, that I first knew something was wrong. Came totally out of the blue," said Yates, who has spent much of 2011 dealing with an aggressive form of bladder cancer.

Doctors removed multiple tumors in January.

2011 Nike Tournament Of Championship Preview: Riverdale Baptist vs St. Mary's

Rarely in your wildest imagination would you conjure up a team that features an emerging star who arrived in the U.S. three years ago to chase a basketball-financed college education, and then pit it against another whose core watched, wide-eyed, as Tina Charles outdueled Ashley and Courtney Paris during the very same game in which they'd play years later.

But this is the season of making dreams come true, after all, and thus the 2011 Nike Tournament of Champions will feature Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and senior Jonquel Jones against St. Mary's (Phoenix, Ariz.) and its long-united nucleus in Thursday's title game of the Joe Smith Invitational Division that carries the event's final-day East-West flavor to an ultimate conclusion.

Competitions like this frequently are won by teams with the kind of star power that, like a gathering storm, Jones has been conjuring for Riverside during this TOC. Her 26-point, 12-rebound performance during the Crusaders' 70-61 victory over Windward (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the Smith semifinals on Wednesday was a stunning piece of bravado exceeded only by her 12-point, 16-board outing against Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) the previous day.

2011 Nike Tournament Of Champions Day 2 Recap

If you like your basketball bold and beautiful, fit for the digital HD and 3D era, and full of high-scoring and dazzling maneuvers, then this year's Joe Smith Invitational Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions may not be the tournament for you.

Heralded as the strongest high school field ever assembled, the Smith bracket has lived up to the billing more in how wide open it's been than in the way anyone may have envisioned the actual play on the court. Speed still kills in this competition, but size matters more than it has in years, and all of the final four teams have it. Those that have both -- and that's mainly Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.) -- may be sitting in the catbird seat.

"If I'm going into a gun fight," said Crusaders coach Diane Richardson, whose team is No. 3 in the POWERADE FAB 50, "I want to have a couple weapons with me."

Briarcrest girls advance to final of O'Ryan Christmas Tournament

image and article from CommercialAppeal.com

Ridgeway's Ashley Jackson (left) and Odegua Oigbokie try to stop Briarcrest's Lauren Douglas from scoring

At times the effort was less than crisp, maybe even a touch sleepy. Still, fourth-ranked Briarcrest, led by seniors Lauren Douglas and Dakota Doss, kept a young Ridgeway squad from getting untracked and advanced to the O'Ryan Christmas Tournament finals with a 48-36 win Tuesday at Harding.

The Saints (10-1) will meet Bartlett for the championship tonight at 6, followed by the boys final (Millington vs. Arlington) at 7:30. Bartlett beat Harding 59-42 behind Destiny James' 27 points.

Briarcrest's Douglass and Doss finished with 18 points apiece, had big first-half scoring bursts to help build a 28-14 lead at the break and solid fourth quarters to seal the victory.

"I slept in this morning -- to 9:30 -- and it took me a while to get really going," said Douglas, a Northwestern-bound center who had 10 first-half points and wound up with three blocked shots.

"I slept to 9:30, too. But we played good defense early, and that was a difference," said Doss, headed to North Alabama. The forward scored many of her points on short jumpers cutting through the lane.

Briarcrest coach Lee Smith's hackles rose a bit toward the end of the game, especially as Ridgeway's Odegua Oigbokie began to establish herself inside, scoring 10 of her team-high 14 points.

The junior's play inside helped the Roadrunners (5-2) cut the lead to single digits twice. And a three-pointer by freshman Breounna Humphrey -- Ridgeway's lone trey of the game, made it a 40-32 game with three minutes to play. But Doss and Douglas hit 10-of-11 free throws in the final eight minutes and scored six points apiece as the Saints shut the door.

"Our strength in the first half became our weakness later when we started letting them beat us on the defensive boards -- and Ridgeway's going to be a very good inside team as it matures," said Smith, whose team has won 10 straight since an opening loss to MHEA. "But overall I was pleased, especially with the defense we played early."

First-year Ridgeway coach Rhonda Kendall, whose team beat MHEA in the tournament's opening round, said "We never really got going today. We shot very poorly, and we're not normally that bad outside. But we were settling for outside shots and letting them pack the defense around our inside players. Second half, we started driving more to the basket and that opened things up a bit. But we're so young (75 percent of the roster is freshman-sophomore) ... we've got lots to learn."

2011 Nike Tournament Of Champions Day 1 Recap

image and story from ESPN Hoopgurlz

The first day of the 2011 Nike Tournament of Champions proved exactly why the event has grown into the premier girls' basketball tournament in the country -- the best played the best.

As with almost every team sport, ranking means very little once the game starts, and five teams ranked in the top 11 spots of the POWERADE FAB 50 coming into the tournament fell in the opening salvo on Monday.

Based on rankings alone, unranked Windward's (Los Angeles) 56-50 win over No. 8 MacArthur (Irving, Texas) was the biggest upset of the Joe Smith Division, but it was No. 24 Cicero-North Syracuse (Cicero, N.Y.) with a 43-40 win over No. 6 Bolingbrook (Ill.) that sent shock waves through the desert.

Despite the national ranking, the Northstars came to the TOC hearing they stood no chance and would be 30-point underdogs in all four of their games. Compounding the dim outlook was an opening-round matchup with Bolingbrook, the defending Illinois state champion, which is playing in its fourth consecutive TOC. But with the No. 1 player in the country on its side, the small community team from upstate New York has a chance in every game.

Oddly, it wasn't ESPN HoopGurlz's top-ranked senior, Breanna Stewart (Connecticut), who offered up the late-game heroics. Instead the fourth quarter belonged to Brittany Paul. The 5-foot-9 senior scored eight of her 10 points in the final period, none bigger than her last shot.

No. 1 Baylor's 66-61 rally past No. 2 Connecticut Highlights

Brittney Griner can finally forget about those missed free throws in Baylor's one-point loss at Connecticut in another 1-2 matchup.

This time, Griner was flawless from the line and scored 12 of her 25 points in the closing run that pushed the top-ranked Lady Bears past No. 2 UConn 66-61 on Sunday night.

Notre Dame hands Kentucky first lost

Skylar Diggins and No. 3 Notre Dame carry a grudge.

Diggins made her only 3-pointer of the game and then forced a turnover as Notre Dame used an 11-0 run to finish off Kentucky (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP) on Sunday, winning 92-83 and handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season. Not only did the Irish snap Kentucky's 10-game winning streak, which was tied for second-best in the country, they avenged a loss last season in Lexington, Ky., in the first meeting between the teams.

Tamara Bates Receives Conference Scholarship

 article from Philander Smith website

Our Memphis Girls Basketball players are doing more than hooping on the court. They are making a difference off the court. Former Ridgeway player, Tamara Bates is a student at Philander Smith College in Little Rock

The next blood drive on campus could be arranged by Tamara Bates, a women's basketball team member who received a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholarship (NAIA) sponsored by the Red Cross.

Bates, 19, a freshman from Memphis, is a biology major who earned the scholarship based on her grades, athleticism and willingness to serve the Red Cross by attending a two-week leadership academy in Washington D.C. next summer. She'll also have to at least two campus-based blood drives.

"I'm excited about this, because I have certain respect and admiration for the Red Cross," she said. "We had a fire at my apartment and my family and I lost just about everything. The Red Cross helped us a lot. This scholarship means a lot to me."

By accepting the scholarship Bates also agrees to become a Red Cross
"Champion of Character" ambassador which means she'll serve on regional and local Red Cross boards and represent the organization at conference events.

4 Things to Do During Holiday Season to Get Recruited

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t be improving your recruiting prospects! Part of being an athlete, especially if you want to play in college, is always working towards your goals. Take time to be with your family and friends, but don’t neglect your passion for sports. The athlete working towards their goals during the holidays is going to get recruited over the one who slacks off!

1. Highlight Video
If you want coaches to recruit you, they have to know you can play. A lot of recruiting takes place online now and you can’t count on coaches coming to your games to meets to see you play. Make sure your video is not too long, features only your best plays (coaches are very limited on time!), includes any skills drills for your sport, and is formatted correctly. Click here to learn more about creating highlight videos and how NCSA can help.

2. Academics
Plenty of athletes are more focused on what’s happening on the field than in the classroom. That makes sense – your sport is your dream, and not every class you take is going to be a ton of fun. But, if you want to play in college, you need to be a student-athlete and that means being academically prepared. Prepare for your standardized tests by taking ACT Prep or SAT prep – the registration deadlines for next year’s test dates are coming up fast! And keep on top of any homework you’re assigned over break – your coach and your future will thank you.
