Basketball Highlight Video Tutorial

I received a rejection letter from Tennessee. Pat Summit could not use my services for her basketball team. A team that went on to win back-to-back-to-back National Championships during my time in college. Oh well, I decided to stay home and play for my hometown team, University of Memphis. I got to play against Tennessee in Knoxville during my sophomore year. I played 24 minutes. I finished with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and I was 6 for 6 from the line. I even made ESPN….for Chamique Holdsclaw blocking my shot!

During my junior year of high school, my dad hooked up 2 VCRs (video cassette recorders) and made a highlight video of my basketball season. I know I’m showing my age. I typed up letters, using a typewriter, and sent the tapes out to several schools. Again I’m showing my age. “Do you know what a typewriter is?”

Pat Summit sent my tape back along with a letter thanking me for my interest in her program. Maybe because she rejected me, I always had a desire to train or coach someone that got the opportunity to play for her at Tennessee. Unfortunately, I will never get the chance to count that as an accomplishment since she is no longer coaching. Well, it will still be an accomplishment to assist a kid to Tennessee.

Before I started MemphisGirlsBasketball.com. I had PatoshaJeffery.com. This was my first website. I created it in 2005. And it didn’t have much to do with me. I did have an About Patosha Jeffery page. However, the focus of the site was writing about the players in Memphis. It was the hub for my AAU team, Mid-South Lady Tigers. I was also providing information on how to get a basketball scholarship.

Ridgeway Girls Roll to Another Victory

from Commercial Appeal

No coach or team likes to lose. But a narrow setback against Memphis Home Education Association a month ago might have been just what the Ridgeway girls basketball team needs to reach its ultimate goal.

The Roadrunners, ranked second in The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen, improved to 19-1 with a businesslike 67-46 victory over visiting Southwind on Friday.
Ridgeway hasn’t lost since a 49-46 loss to MHEA on Dec. 27 and coach Rhonda Kendall said she, for one, was not sad to see the defeat.

“We had beaten big teams from Alabama and Mississippi, but that (loss) refocused us,” the third-year coach said. “It did a lot for us; it woke us up. Like I told them (after the game,) we need to keep our foot on the gas at all times.”

Brandi Beasley, the team’s standout sophomore point guard, agreed.

“I feel like we shouldn’t have lost that game,” she said. “Our communication broke down. ... But it showed us that anybody can be beaten at any time.”

Eryn Foster, a 6-2 junior, led Ridgeway with 16; Beasley added 13. Ridgeway took control early, outscoring the Jaguars 19-5 in the first quarter and leading by 25 at halftime.

The Roadrunners went 28-3 last year, winning 25 games in a row before losing to Overton in the Region 8-AAA tournament. That loss is also motivating Kendall’s team.

“We’re more mature this year,” she said. “We’ve matured a whole lot and that makes a difference. Last year, we didn’t fulfill our goals and this year we’re working hard to keep our focus where it needs to be.”

5 Habits of Highly Ineffective Basketball Players

I was a highly ineffective basketball player. Yep. I was. When I got to college, I was. My first semester of college I struggled. My first practice I struggled. I had an asthma attack in my first practice. I don’t even have asthma. We were having an individual session with just 3 guards. And coach had us all over the place. And I couldn’t breathe. I ended up at the University Health Center. That was during the morning. That afternoon I was supposed to run 2 miles within 16 minutes. “What! I can’t do that. I got asthma.” I asked the doctor could he write a note to my coach explaining that I could not run the 2 miles that day. Little did I know. I would have to run it the next day.

It totally caught me off guard. I was a star. I was a super star. A super star basketball player since 7th grade. I was MVP of my teams for 6 straight years. 7th grade, 8th grade. 9th grade. 10th grade. 11th grade. 12th grade. Why was basketball so difficult when I got to college? Why was preseason conditioning so hard? I use to beat everyone in sprints in junior high and high school.

Because of my ineffectiveness during my days of college basketball, I decided to be a trainer. I decided to educate young ladies on what basketball really was. Especially if they thought about playing on the college level.

Here is a list of habits I had that made me ineffective as a college basketball player.
