MHEA Eagles Flying High Again

image and article from Commercial Appeal

The Memphis Home Education Association girls basketball team is hoping the sixth time will be the charm.

Coach Tracy Rice's Eagles are in the midst of another terrific campaign. They've notched quality wins against teams like Munford, Briarcrest, Whitehaven, Harding, White Station, Arlington and Central and head into Tuesday's game against St. Benedict with a 24-4 record and a No. 4 ranking in The Commercial Appeal's Dandy Dozen.

More impressive is that fact that the vast majority of those victories have come on the road; as a home-school team the Eagles don't technically have a home court. They have managed two "home" games, playing at St. Luke's United Methodist and Mullins United Methodist.

Despite all those victories, it was MHEA's play in a pair of losses over the holidays that gives them hope that this can be the year that they finally capture the Home School National Championship after a frustrating run of five -- yes five -- consecutive runner-up finishes.

MHEA went toe-to-toe with two mid-state powerhouses over the break, losing by 10 against defending AAA champ and national No. 4 Murfreesboro Blackman on Dec. 29 before falling by four against Murfreesboro Riverdale the next day.

As Eagles guard Bailey Wilkes told The Commercial Appeal earlier this month, those games will give them a ton of confidence against home-school competition, which -- for the most part -- won't be as strong as Blackman and Riverdale.

Another check-mark in the Eagles' column is their experience; Wilkes -- who started at point guard as a seventh-grader -- and Ole Miss signee and fellow senior Torri Lewis are the John Stockton and Karl Malone of high school hoops, in terms of games played together. Sharpshooter Jamie Crum completes the big three, while Memphis Nighthawks transfer Samantha Price is also capable of putting up big numbers.

Navigating the national tournament field certainly won't be easy; the defending champion Lubbock (Texas) Titans are strong once again and the rest of the top 10 teams are talented too. But when the competition begins March 9 in Springfield, Mo., the Hoop City contingent will be the one to beat.

Trivia: MHEA senior Torri Lewis has signed to play at Ole Miss. How many other area prospects are currently on the Lady Rebels' roster?

One for the future: One day -- maybe in the not-too-distant future -- the members of the Oliver Branch girls basketball team will get to tell people, "I played ball with Myah Taylor."

Taylor, OB's sophomore guard, is one of the best girls prospects to come through the area in recent years. So far this season, she's averaging 17.7 points, 8 assists and 4.4 steals per game while leading the Quistors to a 21-1 record and the top spot in the Mississippi rankings.

She was lights-out in Olive Branch's 50-40 victory over rival Horn Lake last Friday, scoring 18 points and taking over with key buckets and assists down the stretch. Coaches from a host of schools -- including Memphis, Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Auburn, Mississippi State and Texas State among others -- were in attendance and had to have been impressed by Taylor's poise, decision-making, slick passing and ability to blow past defenders and get to the rim seemingly any time she wanted. Auburn certainly took noticed; they offered her following the game.

At 5-7, the only thing Taylor is lacking right now is some physical strength. But that will come with age and continued work with noted area trainer Scottie Mason. Girls basketball in Mississippi -- and DeSoto County in particular -- is strong and Taylor's stock likely will only rise over the next two seasons.

Top Tigers: Year in and year out, Manassas coach Gerald Harris does one of the best coaching jobs in the city. In his 14 seasons, he's taken the Tigers to the state tournament three times, winning the Class A title in 2009 while finishing runner-up in 2008.

Harris might just be doing his best coaching job this year.

Heading into the weekend, Manassas is 15-4 and in a dogfight with Craigmont and Sheffield for the lead in 16-AA (each team has one league loss). And the Tigers are doing it despite losing a whopping 11 seniors from last year's team that lost in the quarterfinals of the AA state tournament.

Typically for Manassas, the Tigers are winning because everyone is doing his job. Marcus Nesby has had a breakout senior season, averaging 20.2 points per game with a 42-point performance to his credit. But he's the only double-figure scorer.

Damien Fleming, a 6-6 junior, and sophomores Rameek Wooten (5-11) and Joshua Conrad (6-4) have all been solid all season and the Tigers can go pretty deep with their bench. When points can come from just about anywhere, it makes a team hard to beat and is one of the reasons why the Tigers are right in the mix to make the AA County Championship game on Feb. 7.

And if they do, it could be a Harris family affair. Gerald's wife Paula coaches the Manassas girls team, which knocked off Raleigh-Egypt on Tuesday to create a logjam atop the league standings. Things will sort themselves out over the next couple of weeks but Manassas will definitely have a huge say.

Middle school spotlight: Fans can see the high school stars of tomorrow at the SCIAA Middle School championships, which begin Friday with first-round tournament games at various sites. On Saturday, Booker T. Washington Middle will host games for Small Area 1, Chickasaw for Small Area 2 and Kingsbury for Small Area 3. Germantown Middle will host games in Large Areas 1, 2 and 3 also on Saturday.
The semifinals and championships in each division take place Tuesday and Wednesday at Ridgeway Middle. To see the brackets, visit http://sciaa.digitalsports.com/middle-school-sports-information/middle-school-basketball/city-championship-2.

Trivia answer: The Lady Rebels currently have three players from the Shelby/DeSoto area: freshmen Kelsey Briggs (Overton), Kiara Golden (Center Hill) and A'Queen Hayes (Horn Lake).

Nick Saban’s School of Success

Nick Saban is successful in college football. No question about that. From 2009-2012, his Alabama teams dominated college football by winning 3 National Championships. I thought to myself how in the world is he dominating college football like this. What is he doing? Fortunately, I found an hour long YouTube video of him giving a speech on his philosophy of success and more.

Check out some of his quotes at PatoshaJeffery.com

Olive Branch in USA Today Super 25 Expert Rankings

After defeating then-No. 13 Horn Lake last week, it was a no-brainer to me that Olive Branch would move from the Next 25 list into the ranking. However, I did not expect Horn Lake to drop completely out the rankings.

Ridgeway is still undefeated and remains at #4.

John McGraw's Olive Branch (MS) vs Horn Lake (MS) Recap

2017 Myah Taylor of Olive Branch

Recap by Tim Lownsdale @tlownsdale

John McGraw Scouting has covered some of the top players and games in the southeastern part of the country over the course of this basketball season. After making the two and a half hour drive down to Olive Branch Mississippi, the game between nationally ranked Olive Branch HS and Horn Lake HS did not disappoint. Horn Lake came into the game as the defending 6A state champs, #13 in the USA Today poll, and an undefeated record. Olive Branch came in as the defending 6A state runner-up and #26 in the USA Today poll. The game featured some of the top players in the country in their respective classes as well as a packed out gym with about 15 D-1 coaches including multiple head coaches in attendance. Olive Branch used a strong fourth quarter to pull away and won the game 50-40, giving Horn Lake its first loss of the year. The following will be a brief write-up of individual players that I was impressed with in the game.

Horn Lake
Horn Lake came into the game at 19-0 and fresh off of a 6A state championship last year. This team lost some key seniors from last year’s team, but returned a strong guard-post duo in Delta State commit Alondrea Rush and Wright State commit Alexyse Thomas. Alondrea did a very solid job of handling the ball under intense defensive pressure and made some very tough finishes at the basket. Alondrea used her speed and deceptiveness to make things happen for Horn Lake. Delta State is getting a very good player in Rush! Alexyse is a very strong player who uses her strength as her means of scoring points around the basket. She did a decent job of using her size to block off any opposition.

Olive Branch
Prior to this game, I had heard a lot of hype on this Olive Branch team. Needless to say, I walked away VERY impressed with this team. They start 1 junior, 3 sophomores, and a freshman on a team that was ranked 26th in the country prior to this game. This group plays extremely hard and is a very fun team to watch. If you are a college coach of any level, Olive Branch is a must-watch team as indicated with the 13-15 D-1 coaches that were there.

This team is led by super-sophomore Myah Taylor. Myah has a very smooth game offensively that features outstanding ball handling, smart decision making, and a perimeter game that is unguardable. Myah finished this game with 18 points and several very impressive assist. Myah is a high major player with offers from schools such as Baylor, Alabama, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Southern Miss., Texas State, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Western KY, Arizona, Jackson St and also picked up an offer from Auburn after this game. Needless to say, Myah will pick up several more offers along the way. She should be monitored by every college in the country.

Another player that I was very impressed with was another great sophomore in Teal Battle. As Myah was facing multiple double teams, Teal stepped up and knocked down several huge contested shots. Teal is a 6’0 forward who is extremely athletic and has a great post game with a high motor. She showcased the ability to step out and knock down the mid-range shot as well. In this game, she battled with Wright State commit, Alexyse Thomas, and more than handled her own. Teal had a very impressive game and should be monitored by college coaches at the BCS level and below.

The third sophomore I was impressed with is 5’9 forward, Myah Leflore. Leflore is an extremely athletic 3 that plays her position very well. Leflore is a high-motored player on this team that was all over the floor defensively and did a great job of knocking down shots when the opportunity was given. Leflore also did a solid job of handling the ball when needed. Leflore is a definite D-1 player who should be on the radars of college coaches.

I was also very impressed with the play of 5’7 2018 guard, Mahogany Vaught. Vaught is a very good player who played a very mature game as a freshman. From what I was told, Vaught started for this Olive Branch team last year as an 8th grader on the way to state runner-up. Vaught has very nice handles as well as a very nice shot. Vaught held her own, offensively and defensively, against the senior-laden guards that Horn Lake had. Vaught should be monitored for the next 4 years by all levels of D-1.

College coaches should also be sure and check out 5’9 ’16 shooter, Savanna Geeslin. Geeslin didn’t score many points in this game, but the few times she shot the three ball, I felt like it had a great chance of going in. Outside of just shooting, I thought she played very well with the pace of the game and held her own on the court defensively. It was hard to really tell what level she could play at from this game alone.

Over all, despite the impressive individual playing ability by each of these players, I was even more impressed with how they played together as a team. I saw no signs of selfishness which is a credit to the players and to Coach Blake Jones. This group is going to be fun to watch for the next several years!

17 16 Middleton (TN) 19-0 For the most part they are just killing everyone they play, but that’s not saying much. Their schedule is possibly the weakest in the poll. Which is the main reason they will not be able to advance much above their current rank.
18 17 Memphis Overton (TN) 14-2 Beat a good Whitehaven team in their only game this week.

25 11 Holy Cross Covington (KY) 14-3 Upset by an ok Bishop Bossart team, but have strung together 3 wins in a row to get back on track. Have a huge game this Thursday vs Holmes which will go a long way in proving who is the best in Region 9

27 19 Ashland Blazer (KY) 12-4 Can’t seem to get themselves in the upper echelon of KY teams, losing recently to East Carter and Huntington (WV), both quality opponennts.
28 26 Mercy (KY) 12-5 Like Blazer can’t seem to get over the hump to be one of the elite teams in the state. Good enough to take down Butler one night then turn around and lose to Manual
29 NR Smyrna (TN) 14-4 Huge upset over Oakland 60-40 the other night and have looked great recently, with their only loss in 2015 coming vs Blackman. Have a huge matchup Tuesday with Riverdale.

34 NR Brentwood Academy (TN) 17-1 Lost to Knox Webb back in November and have been perfect since beating some quality clubs. Huge matchup looms on Tuesday vs Baylor
35 29 White Co (TN) 19-2 Were poised to keep moving up but lost to one of the top teams in TN class A, Clarkrange.
36 36 West Carroll (TN) 20-0 Continued to keep winning and thus held onto their spot in the top 40. Looking like it’s going to be big showdown in the playoff vs. Gibson Co.
37 39 Houston Co. (TN) 22-1 Another TN Class A school that just keeps winning, although they barely escaped at Community recently
38 32 Simon Kenton (KY) 16-1 They were recently upset by Scott but still have a great chance to win Region 8 in KY.
39 33 Knoxville Webb (TN) 17-4 Have played great all year losing only to teams probably should have beaten them but finally had a bad loss the other day losing to Alcoa, nearly dropping them out of the poll.
tie 40 NR Hamilton Heights (TN) 15-6 Despite having 6 losses, the most of any team in the poll, Hamilton Heights enters for the first time since pre-season. They have played without a doubt one of toughest schedules and possibly with the exception of Blackman and Elizabethtown played the toughest schedule of any team in TN or KY
tie 40 34 Dyersburg (TN) 18-2 Recently upset by a good Martin Westview team but still hold an 18-2 record. UT-Martin signee Myah Taylor dropped 44 points in their last game
