The Horn Lake girls basketball team had to take to the road for the first round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A playoffs today, but that certainly didn't deter the Lady Eagles from accomplishing their mission: A spot in this weekend's North Half Tournament.
The squad coached by Janna Lyons earned its fourth consecutive trip to the North Half tourney by defeating Greenville-Weston, 55-30.
While Friday's opponent is known -- Horn Lake plays Columbus at 7:30 p.m. -- the exact location is to be determined. Should Southaven beat Warren Central Tuesday, North Half will be at Southaven. Should Warren Central prevail, Columbus, a 63-34 winner over Northwest Rankin, will host the four-team tournament.
In improving to 24-4, Horn Lake erupted in the second half to break open a close game at the break.
"We didn't play particularly strong in the first half," said Lyons, whose club led 18-17 at halftime. "I don't know whether it was the (bus) ride or nerves, but we went into the locker room, made the adjustments and made some big runs in the second half."
Offensively, Savannah Kimmons paced Horn Lake with 12 points, while Jasmine Edwards and Brittani Biggins added 11 and 10, respectively.
"It was definitely a collective effort," said Lyons, who received a combined 17 points from Alondrea Rush and Brittany Grant.
