Jasmine Newsome scores 39 points in UT-Martin Victory

The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team had Conference-USA opponent Southern Miss on the ropes early, and sophomore Jasmine Newsome (Millington) delivered several knockout blows en route to a record-setting performance in an 88-69 Skyhawk victory at the Reed Green Coliseum this evening.

With approximately 15 of her aunts, uncles and cousins watching her every move in the stands, Newsome knocked down a school-record nine 3-pointers and ended the night with 39 points, just one shy of Mary Kate Long’s program record of 40 points against Troy State on Jan. 21, 1989. Once the smoke cleared, the Millington native successfully converted 14 of her 25 field goal attempts, adding eight rebounds and seven assists before departing the game late as the Skyhawks held a comfortable lead.

Newsome’s nine trifectas are just one shy of the single-game Ohio Valley Conference record, held by Tennessee Tech’s Stefanie Holbrook in the 2004-05 season. Her nine 3-pointers are the most any opponent has made inside the Reed Green Coliseum.
