Virginia stuns Tennessee Lady Vols
There's nothing like a reward to reinforce that hard work is paying off.
Chelsea Shine and Virginia learned that on Sunday afternoon, outlasting No. 3 Tennessee in overtime to give new coach Joanne Boyle a big victory in just her fourth game as coach. Could be that a national ranking is just around the corner, too.
"This goes to show that the hard work and the program that we're buying into is worth it and it's real," Shine said after scoring 18 points, including a basket early in overtime.
"Everyone on this team is totally sold out on what the coaches want us to do."
The Cavaliers (4-0) came into the game allowing just over 42 points a game, and dictated the pace against a Lady Vols team averaging 90.5 points and accustomed to playing at a fast pace.
And in the overtime, it was Virginia that dominated, scoring 11 consecutive points to answer an opening 3-pointer by the Lady Vols' Taber Spani. With each turnover forced, rebound secured or added points to their tally, the crowd of 6,450 loudly expressed its appreciation.

Oklahoma State women's coaches die in Arkansas plane crash
The Oklahoma State University women's basketball coach and his assistant were killed when the single-engine plane they were in during a recruiting trip crashed in steep terrain in Arkansas, the university said today.
Kurt Budke and Miranda Serna died in the crash Thursday afternoon in the Winona Wildlife Management Area near Perryville, about 45 miles west of Little Rock.
The pilot, 82-year-old former Oklahoma state Sen. Olin Branstetter, and his wife, Paula, also died in the crash. There were no survivors.
"This is our worst nightmare. The entire OSU family is very close, very close indeed," OSU President Burns Hargis said at a news conference. "To lose anyone, especially these two individuals who are incredible life forces in our family, it is worse beyond words."

2011 High School Jamboree Recap - Ridgeway
from Commercial Appeal
Central girls coach Niki Bray, her team fresh off an emotional run to the AAA title last year, said the focus had remained good through the first two weeks of practice. And the Warriors, despite not using LSU-bound senior Danielle Ballard for the exhibition, appeared to show their usual brand of defensive mayhem in a 27-13 rout of Manassas, led by Georgia Tech signee Aaliyah Whiteside.
But Bray was not happy with the effort. “We seemed to forget everything we worked on for two weeks on defense. We haven’t even gotten to offense yet,” she said.
Overton’s girls, who have been to the state tournament the past three years, think they may have found a big piece of their puzzle with the arrival of junior Kelsey Briggs, the star of the Lady Wolverines’ 27-11 rout of a rebuilding White Station team.
“She’s a big guard who can drive to the basket, but also hit threes. She’s a big addition to a team the team that basically came back this year intact,” Overton coach Lynn Smith said.

Jasmine Newsome scores 39 points in UT-Martin Victory
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team had Conference-USA opponent Southern Miss on the ropes early, and sophomore Jasmine Newsome (Millington) delivered several knockout blows en route to a record-setting performance in an 88-69 Skyhawk victory at the Reed Green Coliseum this evening.
With approximately 15 of her aunts, uncles and cousins watching her every move in the stands, Newsome knocked down a school-record nine 3-pointers and ended the night with 39 points, just one shy of Mary Kate Long’s program record of 40 points against Troy State on Jan. 21, 1989. Once the smoke cleared, the Millington native successfully converted 14 of her 25 field goal attempts, adding eight rebounds and seven assists before departing the game late as the Skyhawks held a comfortable lead.
Newsome’s nine trifectas are just one shy of the single-game Ohio Valley Conference record, held by Tennessee Tech’s Stefanie Holbrook in the 2004-05 season. Her nine 3-pointers are the most any opponent has made inside the Reed Green Coliseum.

Ranked Teams participating in 2011 Tennessee Turkey Jamm
Top Ranked Teams in Tennessee Turkey Jamm based on Max Preps
Tennessee Turkey Jamm will be November 25-27, 2011 at Central High School. Click here for schedule.
3. Memphis Central (Tenn.) (29-9)
Nine losses is a lot of losses for a Top 5 team, but the Warriors battled through tragedy (the deaths of two teens close to the team) and a brutal travel schedule. With everyone back, including seniors Danielle Ballard and Aaliyah Whiteside, Memphis Central has the talent and the schedule to make a run at No. 1. And just winning in Tennessee won't be easy, as Riverdale (No. 11 below), Clarksville and Mt. Juliet are all very strong as well.
6. Bolingbrook (Ill.) (29-2)
The Raiders lost their point guard to Tennessee and a post to Illinois, but they're still Top 10 material thanks to the presence of 6-2 UConn-commit Morgan Tuck and 6-3 Illinois-commit Nia Moore. Cabriana Capers, a mere 6-1, will go to Auburn, and junior guard Kennedy Cattenhead is also a Division I-level player. In short, don't expect much of a dropoff from the Illinois champs.
8. Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis) (27-4)
The two-time defending Missouri Class 5 champions have three starters back, including 6-3 post Taylor Manuel, and two sterling sophomores in 6-2 McKenna Treece and 5-6 Nikiah Bell. The Knights will play in the Nike TOC as well as against Whitney Young of Chicago, but the really big games for Incarnate Word are against intracity rival St. Joseph's Academy.
10. Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) (34-2)
Riverdale is behind Memphis Central only because the Warriors lost to Memphis Central in the state finals last spring. But with four starters back, led by Georgia-bound Shacobia Barbee, no one would be surprised if Riverdale avenged that loss when the teams meet in preseason. And no one would be surprised if they play for the Tennessee title again in March.
11. Twinsburg (Ohio) (27-0)
With 6-4 post Malina Howard and high-scoring Ashley Morrissette on the wing, the Tigers are the preseason favorite in Ohio - but it's far from a done deal. Games against Bolingbrook, Shabazz and Detroit Country Day give Twinsburg a chance to prove itself nationally, but in-state rivals Princeton and Canton McKinley might be just as tough.
12. Hoover (Ala.) (33-4)
This is the year for the Buccaneers: They have four returning senior starters, and another Division I senior who came off the bench, so Hoover fans would have high expectations even if 6-1 junior post Marques Webb hadn't transferred in. The Buccaneers only have a few key intersectional games, though, and they need to win them to stay in the Top 15.

CENTRAL RANKED #3 IN MAXPREPS XCELLENT 25 PRESEASON NATIONAL GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS
OH YES, BASKETBALL SEASON IS HERE!
MaxPreps just released there Pre-Season Ranking and Central is in the TOP 3.
Check out the break down of the top 5:
MAXPREPS XCELLENT 25 PRESEASON NATIONAL GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS PRESENTED BY THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
1. Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.) (30-4 last season)
If you like size, you'll love the Crusaders. Start with 6-3 forward Jonquel Jones, an underrated high school All-American, if there is such a thing, add 6-0 wing Jennie Simms (West Virginia), 5-11 shooting guard Kelila Atkinson (Wake Forest) and 6-2 post Brittany Jenkins-Murray, and there's size everywhere. Point guard Auteoanna Jones is "only" 5-7, but since she's just a sophomore, maybe she'll grow some. Oh, and Riverdale Baptist has a tremendous schedule, so if the Crusaders can run the table, they are a no-doubt No. 1.
2. St. Mary's (Phoenix) (28-2)
The Knights finally have some seniors, which is pretty scary since last year, without any, their average margin of victory in the Arizona 5A playoffs was 25.7 points. And even though seniors Shilpa Tummala and Cortnee Walton are NCAA Division I players, it's generally conceded that the junior class is stronger, and that's scarier still. On top of that, they're at home for the Nike TOC. If the Knights win in Phoenix, they should roll through Arizona.
4. St. John's (Washington, D.C.) (33-2)
Four starters return for the Cadets, who lost only to Riverdale Baptist and league rival Holy Cross, a team they beat twice. In addition, St. John's brings in 6-1 freshman Dejanae Boykins and gets Jade Clark back from an ACL tear. In short, the Cadets should be better, and they'll get to show just how much so at the Nike TOC.
5. Norcross (Ga.) (29-3)
Any roster that includes 6-1 senior Diamond Deshields (daughter of former MLB infielder Delino DeShields) is going to be pretty formidable, but coach Angie Hembree also has senior Tori Carter, junior Shayla Cooper and sophomore Bri Williams back from the 29-3 Georgia 5A champions. There are also a couple of D-1 senior posts to anchor the inside game, and a solid schedule - all of which adds up to a Top 10 preseason ranking.

4th Annual Granny's Girls Basketball Camp Preview
This Saturday, November 19, 2011, I will be hosting the 4th Annual Granny's Girls Basketball Camp. This camp is in honor of my grandmother, Mattie Mae Woods, who passed away on February 6, 2008 from lung cancer. The American Cancer Society also benefits from this event. The camp is free to attend, however, participants are asked to donate 2 six packs of Ensure shake.
To give you some insight on how important the camp is to our local community. Last year, while I was delivering the Ensure shakes from the camp, I was told that the American Cancer Society had just ran out of Ensure. I had over 400 individual Ensure shakes in my vehicle. The previous 3 Granny camps have provided over 1200 individual bottles of Ensure shakes to Cancer patients.
This is the hardest and most emotional event I run each year. It gets very difficult for me to prepare for this event. I must take time to thank my family and staff for helping me put on this camp. I would also like to give a special thanks to Ridgeway Baptist Church. They allow me to host this event in their facility -- absolutely free.
If you would like to donate Ensure, feel free to visit Ridgeway Baptist Church at 2500 Ridgeway Rd, Memphis, TN 30119 during the camp hours of 10am-12pm.

Massive Changes to NCAA Rules
Author: by JC Kibbey of NCSA Athletic Recruiting
The governing body of college sports passed some of the most sweeping reforms in its history today.
Scholarship Awards
First, individual conferences may now elect to allow adding $2,000 “full cost-of-attendance” awards to schools’ athletic scholarships (no conference has yet had a chance to vote). Athletes’ busy schedules don’t allow much time to work, so it can be difficult for them to meet expenses that aren’t covered by their scholarships – food, books, gas, etc. The stipend is targeted at easing that burden, though some studies have shown that the average athlete pays as much as $4,000 annually in out-of-pocket college costs.
The new rules will also allow schools to offer athletes multi-year scholarships. The current model requires schools to dole out athletic scholarships one year at a time – critics of that arrangement charged that it left athletes susceptible to being dropped if they were injured or the coaching staff changed. The new arrangement aims to give athletes a more secure position from which to pursue higher education.

2011 Pre Season Show Off Camp 2016/17 Class Evaluations
One thing I can say about the younger players of the camp. They were not intimated by the upper classmen.
Brianna Bullock (White Station) - 5'0 PG. Only 7 grader participant. Did very well against upper classmen competition. Displayed abilities to feed ball to the post. Has 3 point shooting range.
Chynna Ewing (Pulaski Heights (AR)) - 5'5 scoring guard Extremely confident player. Great ball handler, can get into paint, looks for teammates. Always trying to be involved on offense. Can go coast to coast in transition.
Daisha Jiles (ECS) 5'2 Shooting Guard
Emily Lytle (MHEA) 5'11 Three point Shooting Guard
Emily Ridgell (Pulaski Heights (AR)) - 5'5 scoring guard. Confident player. Can hit open jumpers.
Alexis Tolefree (Conway bob Courtway (AR)) 5'4 Smart PG, Good 1 on 1 defender, great entry passer, strong arm, confident, 3 point shooter

Memphis Women's Basketball Inks Highly-Regarded Six Player Class
The University of Memphis women's basketball team announced the signing of six women's basketball players to National Letters of Intent Wednesday. The class has already been called the No. 2 Recruiting class by what ESPN.com's Hoopgurlz classifies as Mid-Major programs, and that was without the addition of a junior college signee to bring the class to its total of six players.
The Tigers went around the country to put together a signing class that features two four-star guards, a junior college forward, a Memphis guard and two more three-star forwards from the prep ranks.
"The 2012 recruiting class is historic in terms of quantity, but more so in terms of quality," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "This group of six young ladies brings impressive individual credentials to the table. However, it is their collective focus on winning championships at the University of Memphis that excites me the most. For a second-consecutive year we add a local Memphis-metro product to our program in Ariel Hearn. We are also excited to welcome Asianna "Asia" Fuqua-Bey, Courtney Powell, Devin Mack, Jaymie Jackson, and Mooriah Rowser from the talent-rich states of Illinois, Maryland, and Ohio."
