Olivia Cunningham scored 23 points and A'Queen Hayes added 11 as the
Southaven girls basketball team rallied past Horn Lake, 50-47, to win
the Mississippi High School Activities Association Region 1-6A title
Friday at Olive Branch.
"We played a great team defensive game," said Southaven coach David
Baldwin, who club improved to 24-4. "We also made our free throws down
the stretch."
Southaven will host Jackson Murrah in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs Monday at 7 p.m.
Horn Lake, ranked No. 1 in The Commercial Appeal's Dandy Dozen,
dropped to 23-2. Both of its losses have come against the Lady Chargers.
The Lady Eagles, who were led by Alondrea Rush's 10 points, will travel
to Northwest Rankin Monday.
In Class 5A:
Center Hill girls 42, Clarksdale 41: Kiara Golden
made a free throw with 0.4 seconds remaining to give the Lady Mustangs
the MHSAA Region 1-5A championship win over the host Lady Wildcats.
Golden, named the tournament MVP, and Erin Cross had 10 points apiece for Center Hill, which opened the game with a 15-0 lead.
"They came storming back," said Center Hill coach Jonathan Moore, "and it was a dogfight until the end."
The Lady Mustangs (24-5) will host Jackson Lanier in a Class 5A first-round playoff contest Monday at 7 p.m.
