Millington Lady Trojan defense keys Dragon Fire title
Millington used a dominating defensive performance, and a star performance from one of their role players to pull away from pesky St. Benedict at Auburndale, 51-37, Tuesday night, and claim a second straight Dragon Fire Invitational championship at Collierville.
Michele Brown, a 5-11 senior who had been quiet in the early season, stepped up for 14 points to lead the Lady Trojans (15-2) and take Tournament MVP honors.

Central at Tournament of Champions Game 3 Report

The Lady Warriors bounced back Tuesday morning to beat Country Day (La Jolla, CA) 56-52 to earn third place in the Red Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions. Memphis Central was led by senior Jasmine Taylor with 18 points followed by freshmen Aaliyah Whiteside and Danielle Ballard who each scored 13 points. The Lady Torros of Country Day did a great job on senior Jamila Ajanaku, holding her scoreless in the first half and just 8 points for the game. Erica Burgess and Malaika Moore each chipped in 2 points. After missing 10 free throws in their loss to #12 Whitney Young, the Lady Warriors stepped to the line against Country Day and shot 100% making 7 out of 7 free throws. Freshman Aaliyah Whiteside was 4 of 4 from the free throw line and Danielle Ballard was 3 of 3. The Lady Warriors, now 12-1, return to action Tuesday, January 5th at Melrose High School at 6:00 pm.

Millington and St. Benedict faced off for the Collierville High Dragon Fire Invitational 2008 Tournament Championship. It started off sloppy with both teams committing turnovers on their first possessions. Symone Daniels scored the first 2 points of the game for St. Benedict and was on fire throughout the first quarter scoring 9 points. Latesa McLaughlin held it down for Millington scoring 10 in the first including 2 three pointers. The first quarter ended tied 16.
Neither team was able to score until the 5:15 mark in the second quarter. The defense was relentless by both squads. And St. Benedict made sure someone was always glued to Jasmine Newsome of Millington. During the first half, St. Benedict had already went 13 players deep in their rotation. At halftime, Millington led 23-22.

Early in the third quarter, Millington's Tamarah Brandon committed her 4th foul and had to sit down forcing Millington to go to their bench. Junior Deanna Jeffries and 6'3 sophomore Misha Jones came in and gave some valuable minutes. Inspite of the foul trouble, Millington turned up the defensive heat and St. Benedict had a couple of costly mental lapses helping Millington to increase the lead. End of Third Quarter 35-30 Millington.
Fourth quarter was all Millington winning the game 51-37.

Whitney Young, ranked No. 12 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50, went down eight in the first quarter then stormed back to take a two-point lead into halftime. It was similar to two great heavyweight boxers going at it. Memphis Central smacked Whitney Young in the mouth with its 17-9 first quarter. The Dolphins responded with an uppercut counterpunch that was a 15-5 second period.
