Ashley Earley Joins Virginia Women’s Basketball Staff
image from Virginia Athletics site
I am a couple of months late on this.. I did not know we had a former Memphis Girls Basketball player in college coaching. Briarcrest's Ashley Earley. Here is part of the press release.
Virginia women's basketball coach Joanne Boyle announced Wednesday (April 25) that Ashley Earley has been hired as an assistant coach with the Cavalier program.
At Virginia, Earley will mentor the post players and assist in all recruiting efforts. "I am blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of this staff at the University of Virginia," Earley said.
"I believe that excellence is a habit and the University of Virginia is the epitome of this. UVa's tradition both in the classroom and on the court is unparalleled. Upon meeting Coach Boyle and her staff I was immediately impressed with their vision and excitement about the direction of the program and wanted to be a part of their future successes. I look forward to what we will accomplish at Virginia."
Earley arrives in Charlottesville after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Marquette, where she served in a similar capacity developing the Golden Eagle post players. Marquette finished 24-9 in her first season in 2010-11 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Surina Dixon, Former Southwind Coach, Now Jackson State Head Coach
Jackson State University has named Surina R. Dixon – a seasoned basketball coach with over 20 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and II levels – as the university’s head women’s basketball coach.
Dixon, a Mississippi native, comes to Jackson State from Southwind High School in Memphis where she compiled a 67-20 overall record over three seasons as head basketball coach. From 2005 to 2007, Dixon was the head coach for Lane College in Jackson, Tenn. Under her leadership, Lane’s Lady Dragons achieved a school record by scoring 119 points in a single game while holding the opponent to only 36 points. Lane’s women’s basketball team was competitive in the classroom as well as on the court. During Dixon’s tenure, the Lady Dragons posted one of the highest grade point averages and most wins in over a decade.
Prior to Lane College, Dixon spent four seasons as the head coach at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). While at UMES, she recorded three straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament first round wins, and her Lady Hawks teams graduated at a 99 percent rate.

2012 Memphis Elite Camp Recap
I had the opportunity to check out part of the 2012 Melissa McFerrin Hoop School Elite Camp. Some of the Memphis area players that I recognized were Laka Blache (Whitehaven/Memphis Elite-Holmes), Leigha Conley (Ridgeway), Khadejah Stevens (Trezevant/Memphis Bobcats), Janeka Williams (East/Tri State Elite), Erin Wilson (Southwind/ Memphis Bobcats), Amber Holmes (Southwind/Memphis Elite-Holmes), and Shandricka Sessom (Byhalia/Mississippi Glory).
During a position skill session, Amber Holmes looked very comfortable using both her left and right hand. She also shocked me with her strength and ability to get out of a trap of 2 huge post players during a 5 on 5 session. The first impression when you watch Shandricka Sessom is her slender build and her ultra athleticism. However, you will be equally impressed with her fundamental skills and I love her step back move. I haven't seen Khadejah Stevens play since before she entered high school and she played in the post. However, this summer I have seen her 3 times, including this camp, and she has been on the perimeter. With long arms and a slender build, I think it is a nice transition for this athletic lefty. I have always enjoyed watching Laka Blache energy during games. But today was the first time I have actually stood next to her and she is huge. She already has a college ready body. I finally got to see H W Byer's Justice Martin (Mississippi Glory) and I like what I saw. If you leave her wide open, she will knock down the 3. She looks strong and is very aggressive. But what I liked most about her, was how vocal she was on the court.

Nikki McCray's career was time well spent
Nikki McCray's (Collierville) sense of time didn't foreshadow her sense of timing.
The first definitely was a deficiency, requiring the forceful suggestion of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt and the generosity of a family member. When McCray arrived at UT as a Prop 48 freshman in 1990, Summitt advised her, "You're going to need a watch." McCray's aunt responded by giving her niece the timepiece off her wrist.
"I had no sense of time," McCray said. "I was late, late, late. That wasn't acceptable."
She wasn't tardy, however, for the explosion in women's basketball that coincided with the 1996 Olympics. In fact, she couldn't have plotted the arc of her career any better to take advantage of the opportunity.
"We talk about the timing of everything," McCray said. "The thing I've prided myself on is the people I've associated myself with."
She'll be in good company this weekend as a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame's Class of 2012. McCray, an assistant coach at South Carolina, will be inducted along with five others, including South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley.
The induction ceremony is at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bijou Theatre.

Memphis Girls Basketball Off Season: Tony Wroten Workout
I personally love this video because Washington's Tony Wroten is a lefty. I'm not a lefty but I think lefties have the prettiest shot....but anyway...This work out demonstrates Wiz Khalifa's song "Work Hard, Play Hard". Just look how hard Tony goes through the drills.. He does not go through the motion slowly. He is aggressive and explosive. I Love It!!

Memphis Girls Basketball Off Season: Fab Melo Work Out
Basketball is not one dimensional. Having the ability to score with counter moves is an awesome asset to have. What is a counter move? Its when the defense adjusts and stops you with you first move, then you come with another one.
If you play the center position, this video is for you. Watch the variety of counter moves from Syracuse's Fab Melo workout.
