2014 SCIAA Fever County Championships Recaps

from Commercial Appeal

Oakhaven girls win Class A county championship

Oakhaven showed that it was more than just the Derica Wiggins show Sunday at FedExForum.
Mar'Shea Lewis scored 14 of her 20 points in the third quarter and B.J. Wells had a near triple-double to lead the Hawks to a 62-27 victory over Booker T. Washington in the SCIAA Class A girls county championship game.

Lewis connected on four 3-pointers in the third period to help the Hawks (17-1) extend their 12-point halftime lead. Wells meanwhile finished with 10 points, 18 rebounds and nine blocks.
Wiggins, the city's top scorer at 33.6 per game, finished with 23.

Freshman Kyla Harris had eight points to lead BTW, which had just two field goals in the first half.

Craigmont girls win AA county championship

After finishing 12-17 a year ago, Craigmont can now add a trophy to its case.
The Chiefs won the SCIAA AA girls championship Sunday at FedExForum, holding off Raleigh-Egypt, 59-56.

Craigmont had a 47-35 lead in the third quarter before the Pharoahs began to claw their way back in. After LaKeidra Greer hit 1 of 2 free throws to put the Chiefs ahead 59-56 with 6.5 seconds left, Raleigh-Egypt failed to get off the potential tying shot.

Danielle Conley had 19 points to lead the Chiefs, 12 in the third quarter. Alexis McFarland came off the bench to score 11, including three 3s.

Brenda Fields had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Raleigh-Egypt.

Ridgeway girls win AAA county title

Ridgeway won the SCIAA AAA girls championship Sunday at FedExForum, coming back from a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Central, 63-54.

Ridgeway, ranked second in The Commercial Appeal's Dandy Dozen, trailed 30-24 at halftime but outscored the Lady Warriors 19-6 in the third quarter to take command.

Ashley Jackson earned game MVP honors for the Roadrunners, finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Brandi Beasley added 14 points, three assists and three steals while Eryn Foster had 14 points and six rebounds.

Darriel Johnson had a game-high 21 for Central, while twin sister Dereka had 16. Tennessee State signee Tia Wooten finished with 11.

The game was a rematch of last year's MIAA city championship game, also won by Ridgeway.

High-scoring Derica Wiggins leads Oakhaven

article and image from Commercial Appeal

It doesn’t take a whole lot to get Oakhaven’s Derica Wiggins going on the basketball court. And once she does, she’s pretty hard to stop.

“All it takes is that first steal or the first 3-pointer,” she said. “When I get that first steal or hit that first 3-pointer, then I know I’m going to have a good game.”

Wiggins, a 5-7 senior, has had plenty of good games for the Hawks this season. She’ll be one of the top players Sunday as FedExForum plays host to the SCIAA Fever county basketball championships.
Wiggins and Oakhaven will tip things off at noon as they battle Booker T. Washington in the girls Class A contest.

The Hawks’ hopes for a victory Sunday — as in every other contest this season — will rest on the shoulders of Wiggins. She is the top scoring player in the city — boy or girl — with an average of 33.6 points per game.

She’s been on a tear the last three weeks, with games of 41 and 47 points and a 50-point outburst in a 90-31 victory over Hillcrest on Jan. 31. Wiggins has led the Hawks to a 16-1 record and a No. 12 ranking in The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen. Their lone loss? By one point against East on Jan. 3.

“She ignites us,” said Hawks coach Frederick Thorns. “She’s the key to our press and just brings so much leadership and experience.”

Wiggins gets her points two main ways. She’s shooting nearly 66 percent from the floor, thanks in large part to her six steals per game, which lead to many easy layups.

And she’s also deadly from long-distance, connecting on nearly four 3-pointers per game, many coming on feeds from Mar’Shea Lewis, who is averaging nearly eight assists.

“Honestly, my team and my coaches (share the credit),” she said. “They help motivate me; whenever I’m down they help pick me up.”

Wiggins also gives plenty of credit to her personal trainer, Cedric Lewis. The two have worked together since middle school and its been a very fruitful relationship.

“She always had the athleticism,” said Lewis. “But she didn’t really know how to play. But she’s evolved and grown so much on the court. Her basketball IQ has done a 180.”

Kiara Golden Class of 2014 Recruiting Update

Received an email from Center Hill's Senior guard, Kiara Golden. She has committed to Ole Miss.

Per Kiara's email,

I have recently made my decision to verbally commit to University of Mississippi Women's Basketball program. I am so excited to play for Coach Matt Insell, his staff and with my future teammates. I have made this decision after officially visiting Ole Miss. I also considered Lamar University, University Central Arkansas , University Arkansas Little Rock, Vanderbilt University, Southern Mississippi University and University of Arkansas.  But I decided on Ole Miss because of the great academics, excitement around the program, what the coaching staff and players believe we can do during my 4 years.  University of Mississippi, I feel is a great fit for me as a student/athlete.

The new staff at Ole Miss has already turned that program around. They are making some noise in the SEC.

I am very excited for Kiara. Congrats!
