Catching up with Memphis-area women's basketball standouts

article from CommericalAppeal.com's The Memphis Edge Blog

Not long ago, we took a look at how some of the former high school standouts from the Memphis area were performing on the nation's basketball courts so far this season. Now, it's time for the women to have their turn. And it's a pretty impressive list too--in fact, this may be one of the deepest college crops Memphis has ever produced in women's hoops.

Alex Black (Harding): Black averages 5.2 points per game for Chattanooga and leads the Lady Mocs in free-throw percentage (.818).

Erica Burgess (Central): Murray State is struggling with a 4-11 record but the former Lady Warriors standout is having a fine season nonetheless, averaging 14.4 points per game (second on the team) while starting every contest. In addition, Burgess is averaging 4.6 boards and leads the Lady Racers in assists (56), steals (43) and minutes (29.1).

Jasmine Gardner (Mitchell): Gardner has appeared in all 14 games for Liberty this season, averaging 4.8 points per game.

Jasmine James (Bartlett): The 5-9 junior is one of the standouts on a Georgia team that is currently 13-3 and one of the top squads in the always dangerous SEC. She's averaging 10.8 points per contest (third on the team) and leads the team in minutes per game (35.1). In addition, James is averaging 5.1 rebounds per game and a team-best 3.9 assists.

Hasina Muhammad (Ridgeway): Last year's Best of the Preps MIAA girls athlete of the year (Muhammad was also a standout high-jumper on the track team) has made a seamless transition to college ball in her first year at Auburn. Muhammad has appeared in all 16 games, starting 10, and leads the Tigers in scoring at 10.8 points per game. Her highest scoring game of the season came in a win against Troy, where she went 9-of-14 from the floor and scored 19 points. She's stepped her game up now that league play has begun, averaging almost 12 points in Auburn's three SEC contests.

Kaitlin Murphy (White Station): Murphy is Furman's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.4 points per contest. Even more impressively, she's made 42-of-46 free-throw attempts and her .913 percentage ranks her fourth in the nation.

Jasmine Newsome (Millington): Newsome is having a spectacular season and leads all Memphis-area products in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game for Tennessee-Martin. The 5-7 sophomore was named Ohio Valley Conference player of the week last week after scoring 37 points (9-of-18 from the floor, 16-of-20 from the foul line) and handing out eight assists in UTM's 114-105 victory over Tennessee State. It's the third time this season that Newsome has earned OVC player of the week mention.

Chigozianyi Okuwumubua (White Station): Okuwumubua is one of the bright spots on a winless Arkansas-Pine Bluff team, averaging 7.6 points per contest. UAPB's roster features two other Memphians as well, Victoria White (Manassas) and Christina Lasane (Craigmont).

Christal Porter (Germantown): Porter, a strong inside player, has made a nice contribution in her freshman season at Rice. She's played in all 15 games--starting two--and is averaging 6.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in just 19 minutes per contest.

Adrienne Pratcher (East): Pratcher has started 12 of Texas A&M's 13 games, scoring 7.5 points per contest while leading the Aggies with 61 assists and 28 steals.

Jasmine Rayner (Northside): Rayner is averaging 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds--both totals of which rank second on the team--for Austin Peay.

Jasmine Robinson (Overton): Robinson, a 5-7 sophomore guard, leads Alabama in scoring at 12.4 points per game. She's seen action in all 17 games for the Crimson Tide, starting 16 of them. Robinson is shooting 34.7 from 3-point range (best on the team) and 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest for a 10-7 squad.

Sarah Watkins (Houston): Watkins is a major contributor on an Arkansas team that is currently 11-4, ranking second on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per contest. The 6-3 junior is also averaging 4.8 rebounds per game and leads the team in blocks (28) and free throw percentage (.750).
