Freshman Jasmine Newsome (Millington) hit a 3-pointer with 5:11 to play in the first half of Friday night's season opener for The University of Tennessee at Martin at Southern Illinois University Carbondale to give the Skyhawks a 17-13 lead and the momentum for good.
Newsome, from Millington, led all scorers with 24 points and led the Skyhawks to a 62-50 victory, their first season-opening victory since 2007 and their first win over SIU Carbondale since 1982.
