Munford's Phenicia Howard dribbles pass Dyer County defender |
The last couple of years the Munford Lady Cougars have been the dominant queens of District 13-3A.
Winning two league champions and a Region title in that span, many experts were picking the Lady Cougars to make it three in row prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign.
But the Dyer County Lady Choctaws traveled to the Munford Gymnasium last Friday night to issue a challenge for the top spot in District 13-3A. Dyer County left an impression winning 48-36.
The Lady Choctaws victory started off slow with Munford leading 6-5 after one quarter. Lady Cougar Phenicia Howard and Lindsey Owen scored the final two buckets for Munford in the opening frame to get the lead.
Dyer County opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 17-6 advantage. Alex Wherry ended Munford’s drought with a jumper in the lane. The Lady Choctaws were ahead 19-8 at the break.
The offense picked up for both teams in the third quarter the Lady Cougars outscoring Dyer County 16-11. Howard was the shooting star for Munford in the period.
The guard scored on a layup and jumper in the lane to make the score 21-14 early in the third. Then Howard displayed her long-range shooting nailing a trey to make the tally 23-17.
After Howard used a spin moved to hit a jumper in the paint the Lady Cougars trailed 23-20. Munford got to within a point when Precious Mills drove to the rim and bounced a pass to Owen for a layup.
Dyer County responded with a 7-2 run to close out the third quarter to lead 30-24.
In the fourth quarter the Lady Choctaws hit timely three-pointer to neutralize any Munford comeback effort. Dyer County only led 30-27 in the early moments of the fourth. Then the Lady Choctaws outscored the Lady Cougars 18-9 for the 12-point victory.
