MLK Championship Report

Millington vs White Station

This game was such a great matchup. It had the feel of a State Championship game, very intense and highly competitive.

Millington jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Chi Chi Okwumabua made a freethrow then Millington went on another 5-0 run before Chi Chi Okwumabua scored a bucket. Megan Miles was the only other scorer in the first quarter for White Station with a 3. The 1st quarter ended at 13-6.

White Station started the second quarter on a 5-2 run with Bria Dillard coming off the bench scoring the 5 points with a 3 pointer and 2 free throws. Millington countered with a 4-0 to make the score 19-11 Millington. White Station's Kaitlin Murphy got going and White Station took the lead at half time after a 11-1 run.

Half Time Score: 22-21

Millington's Jasmine Newsome had 3 fouls heading into the second half and did not start in the third quarter but she came off the bench immediately because White Station had increased their lead to 7 at 28-21. At the end of the third quarter the score was 39-32.

In the fourth quarter Millington was able to tie the game at 41. At the 1 minute mark, the score was again tied with Millington having posession. They tried to hold the ball for the last shot however it was stolen by Kaitlin Murphy at 6 seconds. She was able to pass it to Chi Chi Okwumabua and then to Chetavia Rutherford but she missed the layup. Overtime.

In overtime, at the 1:33 mark again the score was tied at 55. Millington had the ball at 1.6 seconds and was inbounding the ball under White Stations basket. Jasmine Newsome attempted a half court shot but missed. Overtime 2.

During the second Overtime, the momentum was all White Station winning the game 62-58. Chi Chi finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds. However, the unsung hero for White Station was 6'2 post, Carnecia Williams. She came off the bench and put in 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 key assists. Jasmine Newsome had 33 for Millington. Kaitlin Murphy for White Station was awarded tournament MVP.
