U17 World Championships Team

A few weeks ago I announced that Central's Danielle Ballard will be trying out for the U17 World Championships Team. There are actually 36 players trying out.

The trials will include 10 players who competed for the USA U16 National Team, which won gold in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City. The U17 team will compete at the FIBA U17 World Championship July 16-25 in Rodez and Toulouse, France.

The trials will take place June 8-11 and selections for the U17 team will be made in addition to selections for the new Youth Olympic Games. The new games will take place in Singapore Aug. 14-26 and will feature 20 team which will compete in 3-on-3 basketball. In total, there are 16 roster spots up for grabs in Colorado Springs next month.

Of the invitees, 13 are new faces to USA Basketball while 13 were invited a year ago but were not selected to the U16 team.

Girls Basketball Speed & Agility Camp Recap

The Girls Basketball Speed & Agility Camp was a success. Thank you to all the participants that came out to learn how to be more powerful, explosive, and agile basketball players. By attending the camp, the young ladies also put themselves a step ahead of the competition in girls basketball.

Rob Weatherly of Velocity Sports Performance did an excellent job showing the young ladies the different ways to warm up and stretch, drills to increase agility and quickness and how it applies to basketball. And you know I could not let the young ladies come to a girls basketball camp and not go over basketball skills. I had the young ladies go through stations of shooting, dribbling, passing and free throw shooting.

Check out the highlights.

Girls Basketball in Africa

These videos will show you an inspirational story of dreaming, sacrificing and giving back.

In the middle of an economic recession, Mobolaji Akiode quit her job and packed the apartment. She moved 5,000 miles from Bristol, Conn. to Lagos, Nigeria, which is going on 18 million and soon to be the most populous city in Africa. Her goal was both simple and grand: to use sports, particularly basketball camps, to inspire and empower impoverished young women, first in Nigeria and then throughout the African continent.

Mobolaji Akiode was sitting in her old bedroom in her parents' home in New Jersey, rifling through memorabilia from her days as a basketball star. There were the photos of the Columbia (Maplewood, N.J.) High School team that won the 1998 state finals, clippings from her record-setting years at Fordham University, mementos from her tenure as a Nigerian-American member of the Nigerian teams at the Summer Olympics in 2000 and 2004.

At that moment, she decided to do something different.

Sexual Abuse in Sports

I don't know how people are going to react to this post.

But this is real. This is important and it is happening in girls basketball.

Players and parents should be aware and educated on this subject.

There was a recent story on ESPN's Outside the Lines about a young lady that was molested by her swim coach. She was 14 years old. Watch the video for her story.

Although Outside the Lines focused on swimming, again it happens in girls basketball.

Tips for Parents from Dr. Robert Shoop, Director, Cargill Center for Ethical Leadership

**Look for Problems, Don't wait til they come to you
**Talk to your child everyday and ask how things are going
**Look for warning signs (constantly transporting child alone, massaging)
