How to Get a Girls Basketball Scholarship: Number 1 Thing to Do Today

By Patosha Jeffery

I have been around so many talented girls basketball players. However, it’s so frustrating to watch these players enter their senior years with little to no opportunities to play basketball on the college level.

I watched one player become one of the most prolific scorers of her city. The summer heading into her senior year she was the talk of summer travel ball. She had evaluators talking about her performances left and right on websites, Facebook and Twitter. Yet, her parents were panicking because it was not turning into scholarship offers. As a matter of fact, she only had 1 scholarship offer and she took it. Unfortunately, she was looking to transfer before her college freshman season even started.

Brandi Beasley, Jaida Roper, Nicole Ungaro Shine in 94/50 Showcase

Recently, several Memphis players traveled to Clarksville, TN to participate in the inaugural 94/50 Elite Player Combine. FullCourt.com was in the building observing the talent.

Brandi Beasley, Jaida Roper, and Nicole Ungaro stood out amongst the players.

Check out their evaluations:

Brandi Beasley (5-7 – St. George's HS Ridgeway, Memphis, TN – 2016) Beasley has been a national circuit performer for some time now and her mentioning among the very best in the state has been there for some time. A 2016 Full Court watchlist candidate, Beasley has the game and build to be one of the top point guards nationally in the class of 2016. She’s what we would classify as a “find first” point, meaning she’d rather distribute to open teammates than score. Her strong ball-handling skills and toughness make her attractive at the next level. Always in attack mode, the Memphis native will need to improve her shooting for both the mid-range and 3-point arch to warrant major consideration for All-American status, but a sure high end Division I prospect in time. (Category: Penetrator, Attacker, Distributor, Rim-Finisher)

Jaida Roper (5-5 – Houston HS, Collierville, TN – 2016) While many may look at Roper and see a diminutive and petite frame, her game screams like a giant. An absolute wizard with the ball in her hands, Roper showed on countless occasions that there are very few defenders who can stay in front of her as her crafty dribbling skills are effective and effortless. She executes dribble drives with purposes and can get anywhere she pleases on the basketball court with the ball. Roper also showed the ability to score at a high rate. Her ability to stretch the defense with three-point shooting makes her a very attractive prospect despite her lack of size and weight. (Category: Crafty Handler, Lead-Guard, Entertainer, Scoring PG)

Nicole Ungaro (6-0 – St. Benedict HS, Collierville, TN – 2016) Ungaro has a high basketball I.Q. and has good size for her position. A crafty finisher over the shot blockers and she also finishes well with both hands around the basket. (Category: Power Wing; Cerebral Player; Average Athlete)

5 Steps to Creating a College List

By Patosha Jeffery

During the spring, I held a recruiting seminar for my team. During the seminar and throughout the rest of our season, I preached to create your list of schools. As I continued to think about the task of creating a list of colleges that you are interested in attending, it really is not as easy as it sounds. Most kids, players, parents, coaches are only familiar with their local schools or teams that they hear about on TV, like ESPN.

I know there are a lot of schools and opportunities available. So, I was thinking. How can I make this process easy for people? I did some research and found a nice article and tools on the College Board website.

Here are the College Board’s 5 Tips to Creating a College List:

Jessica Green hired as Mid-South CC Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

image and article from Mid-South Community College Athletics site

Jessica Green has been hired as assistant coach for the women’s basketball team for the 2013-14 season.  The Memphis native comes to MSCC after a stellar four-year career at Christian Brothers University in Memphis and serving as an AAU basketball coach for four seasons.

Green graduated from Lausanne Collegiate School where she lettered four years for coach Wayne Kelley while earning All-State honors and helping lead the Lynx to the 2008 state championship.  Her high school recognition also included All-District and All-Region honors while being named to the Memphis Commercial Appeal “Best of the Preps” team.

Green then accepted a basketball scholarship at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, and played for Coach Sarah Condra.  In four seasons at CBU, the three-point specialist was named Academic All-Conference three years while earning her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. Green also served as team captain as a junior and senior, and finished her collegiate career with the third most three-pointers and third highest three-point percentage in CBU history.

Green also has been heavily involved in the Memphis AAU scene, coaching with the Memphis Elite and Bluff City Magic travel teams the last four summers with Don Williams. She is currently working in the MSCC academic enhancement program and helps in college recruitment in addition to her coaching duties.

2013 Fall Exposure League Week 3 Recap

I have to start the Fall Exposure League Week 3 Recap off with a congratulations to Team Memphis for going undefeated. This was a team that simply would not quit. There were several times the team would be down heading into the last 5 minutes of the game and they just turned it up.

The anchor for Memphis was definitely 6'2 junior Alexyse Thomas (Horn Lake). She is a face up post that stretches the defense with her outside shooting and passing abilities to cutting teammates. When she is in the paint, she has great hands to catch all kinds of passes. She finished the day with 18 points.

The point guard for Memphis was junior Katherine Newman (Briarcrest). She is a mature player with a nice shot from long range. She had 10 points.

Every team needs that one player that does not mind doing the dirty work. Junior guard Olivia Roberts (St. George's) was that player for Memphis. She aggressively defends, crashes the boards and gets buckets. She had 8 points.

Junior twins Elise and Brynn Holden are alumni of The League participating for the third straight year. They continue to bring their high energy, ball handling abilities and aggressive rebounding. Plus, its a task to guard them because they love moving with out the ball.

Sydney Malone
As the weeks went on, UConn's sophomore guard/forward Sydney Malone (Houston) got more in a rhythm. She built on her Week 2's performance. She continued to use her strong body to bully for points in the paint. Then she took her game to the 3 point line. Sydney has also improved her free throw shooting. She had 14 points.
Johne Stewart

Another player from UConn that finished with 14 points was 8th grader, Johne Stewart (Snowden). Remember her name. She will be one of the best guards to come out of Memphis. She is extremely confident and has handles and abilities to 'break ankles". She loves to penetrate to the basket for a floater. Then she plays both sides of the ball -- on offense and defense. She is an active on-the-ball defender.

Kenyatta Echols

Senior guard Kenyatta Echols (Hillcrest) for Tennessee came out of her shell during week 3 to lead the team with 12 points. She is an athletic guard that can get to the basket in one-on-one situations to score.  She moves a lot on offense with out the ball and rebounds from the guard spot.

Junior guard Phenicia Howard (Munford) is another Girls Basketball Exposure event veteran playing in her third Fall League. She has developed from a shy guard into a tough point guard with abilities to go left and right. She is strong and quick. She can get get through traffic into the paint to score. If you play off her, she will knock down the three.

Watch List

Carmen Moore

Carmen Moore (First Assembly) is a 6'0 sophomore post player. She takes up a lot of space in the paint. It was difficult for players to post up on her. She can rebound and has nice range on her shot.

LaVaesha Jackson (Catholic) is a 5'7 sophomore guard with some nice hops.  She is quick to the basketball and has an instinct for rebounding at the guard spot.

Brianna Cooks (Snowden) is a 7th grade point  guard that I will be keeping my eye on. She is a developing floor general. I like how she handles the ball with her head up. She can go left to the rack and finish.

Week 3 Scores
 Tennessee 31 UConn 48
Memphis 58 Notre Dame 52
Louisville 37 California 57

Memphis Women's Basketball Picked to Finish Sixth in American Athletic Conference Inaugural Coaches' Poll

 image and article from GoTigersGo.com

Coming off a fourth straight post season appearance in last year's WNIT field, the University of Memphis women's basketball team was picked to finish sixth in a poll of the American Athletic Conference head coaches it was announced Monday.

"One of our goals as a team entering the American Athletic Conference was that we came in as a team that had some credibility," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "Obviously, SMU was our conference winner last season, however, the recent success of our program has not gone unnoticed as is evidenced by the preseason poll. "

Defending national champion Connecticut was named the preseason pick to win the conference crown, with Louisville picked to finish second. USF, Rutgers and SMU round out the top five of the preseason picks.

"We have significant challenges in the American, however we have great opportunity," McFerrin said. "We will be bold in our expectations in The American. We are not naïve to the competition level, but we will expect to compete and compete well on the court."

The preseason poll was released in conjunction with the league's media day, hosted at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., Monday. The WNBA arena will be the host site of the league's conference tournament in March.

"The American media day was held in an absolute first class Mohegan Sun arena. It gives us an opportunity for national exposure for The American as well as for the University of Memphis. This is, without question, one of the greatest facilities to host a conference tournament in the nation. The fans will have a tremendous basketball and entertainment experience."

2013-14 Preseason Coaches Poll

2. Louisville (1) 73

Jannah Tucker says she was abused

article from ESPNW.com, image from BaltimoresSun.com

In July, highly prized Lady Vols basketball recruit Jannah Tucker decided not to enroll at Tennessee due to personal reasons.

Last week, it was revealed that Tucker's reasons were both personal and tragic.

"There were many instances of physical abuse this past summer, with the last occurring on Tuesday, September 24, 2013," Tucker said in a statement. "I was badly beaten and had several injuries. However, I was never in critical condition nor was I admitted to the hospital."

Baltimore County police arrested Josh Gerrard, 19, of Owings Mills, Md., on Sept. 25 after Tucker's mother told police that her daughter had sent several text messages on Sept. 24 -- including one of a photo of Tucker with a severely bruised left eye -- saying she had been hit by Gerrard and instructing her mother not to call police. According to the report, Tucker had wanted to meet her mother but was being held in the house by Gerrard. He has been charged with second-degree assault.

When police arrived at the home that Gerrard and Tucker had been sharing, they noticed a large bruise and a red mark on Tucker's left cheek and eye, according to the report. Tucker did not receive medical treatment, the police report said.

Gerrard told police he and Tucker "were just playing." Upon his arrival at the police station, Gerrard reportedly threatened to injure the person who reported him.

After the arrest, Tucker "got an emergency temporary protective order against the offender," she said in the statement. "That order was amended October 3rd becoming a permanent protective order which will be in effect for one year."

Tucker and Gerrard had been dating for two years and living together for three months, the police report said.

Tucker, 18, was the No. 8 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz rankings for the 2013 class and became the first underclassman to commit to Tennessee in the post-Pat Summitt era when she announced her decision in June 2012.

She spent part of the summer of 2012 winning a gold medal with USA Basketball at the FIBA Americas in Puerto Rico, but she injured her knee during the tournament. She signed with Tennessee in November but sat out her senior season, nursing her knee injury.

Featuring Tucker, Mercedes Russell (the No. 1 prospect in the 2013 class) and Jordan Reynolds (No. 42), Tennessee's 2013 class was ranked No. 3 in the nation.

But rather than playing basketball, Tucker is now focusing on something much bigger.

"I want what happened to me to inspire other girls to find their own voice and strength," Tucker said in a statement released to Blue Star Media. "… My interest is to help others recognize and prevent domestic violence."
