2013 Pre-Season Show Off Camp 2014 Class Preview

The 5th Annual Pre-Season Show Off Camp will kick off this Saturday, September 28 at Ridgeway Baptist Church Christian Life Center @ 2500 Ridgeway Rd., 38119. Sixty players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in 3 games to the Division 1 Women's College basketball coaches in attendance.

Here is a breakdown of several seniors who will be participating:

Kiara Golden (Center Hill (MS)) Combo Guard. She is a lefty athlete.  She can score with the left and right hand in a variety of ways around the basket and knock down the 3 point shot. As a point guard, she has a vision on the court which allows her to make some nice passes to her teammates in the open court and towards the block. Averaged over 80% from free throw line as a Junior. Watch 2010 Highlight Video

Kairneisha Trent (Wooddale) Guard. She is one of the most athletic and agile players with abilities to slash and maneuver through traffic. She has a nice stroke and can make the 3 point shot. Read Blue Star Media Evaluation

Alyssia King (Senatobia (MS))  She is a fast lefty point guard who loves to get to the basket and score in a half court set. Has averaged over 13 points during the Fall Exposure League and exploded for 18 points during Week 3.

Margy Westbrook (Fayette Academy) Post.  The slender 5'10 post moves extremely well around the basket, has nice hands and can get rebounds.

Dominique Baker (Olive Branch) Mature Point guard

Dariya Drew (Southwind) 3 point shooting guard

Kenyatta Echols (Hillcrest) Athletic Shooting Guard. Averaged over 15 points as a junior.

Raylan Starks  (Arlington) 5'10 Post Player

2013 Fall Exposure League Week 3 Preview

Last week, THE LEAGUE went from a basketball event to a community of mentorship and support. I can't wait to see what happens this week! All games are played at Ridgeway Baptist Church Christian Life Center at 2500 Ridgeway Rd. Memphis, TN 38119.

Game 1: 9:45am UConn vs Tennessee

This will be a match up of the shooting guards.

UConn and Tennessee is one of the fiercest rivalries in women's college basketball. The schools started playing each other in 1995. In my opinion, this series really elevated womens basketball to another level. On June 8, 2007, it was announced the schools would discontinue the regular-season series. So why not bring the series back in the Fall Exposure League?

This game will feature two of the top shooting guards in this area. Uconn's junior Taylor Robertson (Rossville) and Tennessee's junior Brenda Fields (Raleigh-Egypt). Taylor averaged around 15.71 points heading into post play last season and Brenda averaged 16.32.

Which player will have a break out game during Week 3?

Game 2: 10:45am Memphis vs Notre Dame

This will be a match up of the team to beat.

It was just too good to be true! Can you imagine being able to go to a Memphis Lady Tigers' game against Notre Dame. It almost happened until the Big East fell apart. Notre Dame is now in the ACC conference and Memphis is in the AAC. However, in the Fall Exposure League anything is possible.

Memphis is the lone undefeated team. Last week, they had a remarkable comeback victory with 2 minutes left against UConn.  They have a nice combination of talent on the team and do not believe in giving up.

Can Notre Dame take Memphis down?

Game 3: 11:45am Louisville vs California

This will be a match up of the Final Four.

Both college teams had a cinderella 2012-13 season making it to the Final Four. Louisville continued their fairy tale season into the championship game.

The way California started the league. Then turned it around on last week. I say they are having a cinderella league. Will Louisville spoil the momentum like the college team did during last season's NCAA tournament?

Who will step up and lead their teams to victory?

2013 Fall Exposure League Week 2 Recap

Another great week of THE LEAGUE. Ron McClain, the league's Head Ref, said it best on Facebook.
"The older girls are being very good mentors for the younger girls. Crowds are being very supportive and it's a positive environment".
The league is truly an awesome environment of competition, exposure, MENTORSHIP and SUPPORT.. This event has truly grown beyond basketball.. Speaking of exposure Jackson State Community College was in the building to check out Week 2. Plus I recorded the games to give me an additional opportunity to evaluate the players.

Sophomore forward Manaya Jones (Raleigh-Egypt) continues to impress me. This week she displayed a different side of her game. She showed that she can get the ball to teammates if defense collapses on her. The most impressive skill set she displayed was her ability to deflect passes and get steals. Plus, she can aggressively clean up the boards. She had 9 rebounds for the game.

As I was watching the recording of the games, there were a couple of players that made me say who is that. These players just seem to always be around the basketball doing the little things. Sophomore Sydney Malone (Houston) is a guard/forward. Because she is a lefty, it throws defenders off. Plus, she knows how to use her body to shield the ball while attempting shots in the post. She actively gets rebounds, steals and can block shots. Plus, she can transition to a shooter on the perimeter and slasher to the basket.

Kynadi Kuykendoll (Snowden) is another active 7th grader guard. She is a young player, however, I see the potential. She can handle the basketball. She is not afraid to crash the boards. She is small yet strong enough to cause tie ups and she has anticipation skills.

California's Emanye Robertson, Jayla Hemingway, Maia McCoy (l to r)

The most impressive thing I witnessed was the transformation of California. In Week 1, California could barely score. Week 2 - California was ready.  Junior guard Emanye Robertson (White Station) continued her aggressive style of play leading the team in scoring with 15 points while finishing 7 for 7 from the free throw line. Junior guard Maia McCoy (Whitehaven) displayed her athleticism, her ability to make jump shots and her ability to get to the basket aggressively. She scored 9 points while finishing 3 for 3 from the line. Seventh grader Jayla Hemingway (Schilling Farms) displayed how she took last year's Pre-Season Show Camp over with her basketball skills. She is an aggressive player that plays off a high level of energy.

Notre Dame's Alyssia King and Margy Westbrook (l to r)
Senior Alyssia  King (Senatobia)  had a second straight 11 point game for Notre Dame. She is a fast lefty point guard who loves to get to the basket in a half court set. Senior forward Margy Westbrook (Fayette Academy) made her first appearance in THE LEAGUE this week. The slender 5'10 post moves extremely well around the basket, has nice hands and can get rebounds.  Another player making her debut this week was Louisville's Dominique Baker (Olive Branch). She is quick with the ball and a very mature point guard.

Another young player I plan to keep my  eye on is 8th grader Kylie Loadholt (MHEA). She is tall in height, yet tiny in size, but she seems to always be around the basketball.

This week several of the older players will be taking the ACT test. I would like to extend a good luck to them and a reminder to get some rest on Friday night.

Journey to Memphis' Next Top Baller Episode 18

Sorry for the delay in this episode. I am in the middle of the Memphis Girls Basketball Fall Fest, which has me swamped with tasks. The Fall Exposure League has been absolutely outstanding. The competition is great. The fans are great. It's just an awesome atmosphere for girls basketball. Feel free to check it out this Saturday at Ridgeway Baptist Church. Games begin at 9:45am.

In the last few episodes, the focus has been on speed, agility, and reaction drills. I decided to provide you with a ball handling drill this week. During my trainings sessions, I focus a lot on both left and right hand development. It's important to be a balanced, well rounded player. This decreases your limits as far as going left and right.

In the video, you will see a line drill where the players dribble with 2 basketballs performing the pound and alternate dribble.

2013 Fall Exposure League Week 2 Preview

Last week, we had an unbelievable environment of basketball. This week should be even better! All games are played at Ridgeway Baptist Church Christian Life Center at 2500 Ridgeway Rd. Memphis, TN 38119.

Game 1: 9:45am UConn vs Memphis

This will be a match up of the bigs.

Memphis girls basketball fans are more familiar with 6'2 post Manaya Jones (UConn/Raleigh-Egypt). She is a go to player with a variety of moves on  the block.  Six-two post Alexyse Thomas (Memphis) made her introduction to Memphis last week. The Horn Lake (MS) junior has an extra year of high school basketball experience on Manaya so she will not shy away from the challenge of playing against a younger 6'2 player.

I can not remember a situation in recent years where you have two extremely talented bigs going head-to-head against each other. I'm excited it's happening in THE LEAGUE.

Game 2: 10:45am Tennessee vs California

This will be a match up of Juniors vs Seniors.

Tennessee seniors Kiara Golden (Center Hill (MS)) and Kairniesha "Shay" Trent (Wooddale) have been playing summer basketball together for years. Last week, Kiara lead the league in scoring in swag fashion with 17 points. Shay was pretty quiet, but don't let that fool you. She is capable of putting up double figures in athletic fashion both on the perimeter and in the paint.

California juniors Emanye Robertson (White Station) and Maia McCoy (Whitehaven) had a great July with Team All In. Their addition took that team to another level. Emanye brought her July momentum into Week 1 of THE LEAGUE scoring 15 points. Maia couldn't quite get it going in the game. Week 2 should give her an opportunity to show the fans her athletic and scoring abilities.

This will be a nice match up of long, athletic guards. California had a rough start last week. Can the juniors bring their A game and motivate the squad to take down the undefeated senior lead Tennessee team?

Game 3: 11:45am Louisville vs Notre Dame

This will be a match up of the Tennessee Flight.

This summer both junior's Kaylan Pugh (Notre Dame/St. Mary's) and Victoria "Torri" Lewis (Louisville/MHEA) took their talents to the Tennessee Flight organization based out of the Nashville area. They have contrasting games. Kaylan is the female version of Lebron James with a mature body frame and bulldozing desire to get into the lane for buckets. Torri is a tall shooting guard that's deadly on the perimeter.

Which style of play will lead their team to their first victory?

2013 Fall Exposure League Week 1 Recap II

What an unbelievable 2013 Fall Exposure League Week 1 we had. The atmosphere was great.
The gym was packed. The crowd was into the games. And several players put on a show! LeMoyne Owen's new head coach took in the action, along with Rust College's Head women's basketball coach.

Emanye Robertson (White Station/2015) kicked the league off by scoring the first two points. Unfortunately, she was the only player that seemed to be able to score for California knocking down 15 of the team's 21 points. She could have easily quit but it's just not her nature. She is an energizer bunny that keeps going and going and going.  She is a point guard with the ability to get to the basket. Going to the basket creates opportunities for her to get to the free throw line also. However, don't try to play her for the drive. If you do, she will knock down the jump shot. She hit 2 three pointers in the game.

Every player on the Memphis team scored. But 6'2 forward Alexyse Thomas (Horn Lake/2015) stole the show. She is a huge presence on the floor. She dropped off 16 points in Memphis' win. Alexyse can pass. She can come out the paint and set picks. Plus she knows how to roll to the basket and call for the ball.

Game 2 gave fans a chance to witness a match up of finesse against power. First for Notre Dame, all around guard Kaylan Pugh (St. Mary's/2015) represents power. It's no secret how she has averaged over 20 points a game since playing varsity as an 8th grader. She is a scorer with a mature body frame and gets to the basket. She used her power to finish with 12 points.

You may not be familiar with Tennessee's Kiara Golden (Center Hill (MS)/2014). She represents finesse. She is one of the smoothest players I have ever seen in this area. The first thing that came out of a friends of mine's mouth was "She is so smooth". I have been watching Kiara since she was in the 8th grade. You could see her swag back then. Now she has the maturity to go with it. She is a lefty athlete.  She can score with the left and right hand in a variety of ways around the basket and knock down the 3 point shot. As a point guard, she has a vision on the court which allows her to make some nice passes to her teammates in the open court and towards the block.  She lead the league in scoring with 17 points.

Game 3 gave me an opportunity to see a different side to Victoria "Torri" Lewis (MHEA/2015). Torri is known for her shooting abilities. However, during Week 1 she displayed that she can set teammates up also. On several occasions, Torri penetrated to the basket and dumped the ball off as defenders drew to her. At 5'10, she also made her presence known to the smaller guards. On a couple of series, a quicker guard got by Torri and thought they had a wide open shot. To their surprise, Torri recoverd by blocking their shot attempt. Torri lead Louisville in scoring with 11 points.

6'2 Forward Manaya Jones (Raleigh-Egypt/2016) put on a show in the paint. Knee problems has hindered her in the past. But during Week 1, Manaya looked real good. She looks quicker. She pulled out all the moves on Saturday. She played with her back to the basket. She shot jumpers from short corner extended. Manaya finished with 14 points for UConn.

Two young players that stood out were 8th grader's Johne Stewart (Snowden) and Aliyah Wells (Briarcrest). Johne plays for UConn and she is a flashy point guard that can shake and bake. Aliyah plays for Louisville and she is a slender 5'11 post player that can get up the floor extremely fast. I will be adding these two to my watch list.

2013 Fall Exposure League Week 1 Recap I

First of all, I would like to give a shout out to the upper classmen players for embracing the younger players. It's not easy to come into an environment as a high school player and play with girls in middle school. On the other hand, some of the middle school players were ready for the challenge and ready to make a name for themselves. The future is mighty bright!

Next, I would like to  address the #1 question I get from my individual events.

WHERE ARE THE TEAM COACHES?
In 5 years of hosting individual events, I have never brought in team coaches. I wanted to create an environment where the girls could just play ball.

  • The players don't have to worry about adjusting to a new coach, who may be a total stranger.
  • The players don't have to worry about certain players getting all the playing time because of favoritism.
  • The players don't have to worry about someone harassing them about playing for their team.
  • The players don't have to worry about someone restricting them from being creative and trying new things on the court.
All they have to do is relax, enjoy hanging with friends, meet new players, make new friends and enjoy playing basketball.

With no coaches, there are rules. The players decide who start with the understanding that there will be 3 substitution periods. It is a beautiful thing to watch the players huddle up before their game communicating and getting to know each other in order to decide who will start the game. Teamwork is being created and leaders are rising to the occasion. The players are in a learning and growing environment and they don't even realize it.

Another question I received.

HOW IS MY DAUGHTER GETTING EXPOSURE?

I am a resource that college coaches use to learn about talented players in the Memphis area. They contact me on a regular basis asking about players. Hundreds of college coaches follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and visit MemphisGirlsBasketball.com regularly. I attend area basketball games, tournaments, and host events to learn about the players in our area.

Just to give you one example of how exposure works with the league.

Exposure for a participant in my league does not begin and end with playing in one of the games. The exposure actually begins before the league even starts. By me placing the player's name, position, school and AAU/Travel team on the who's participating list and listing it on GirlsBasketballExposure.com and MemphisGirlsBasketball.com is exposure.

By me placing the rosters with the player's name, school and graduation year and listing it on GirlsBasketballExposure.com and MemphisGirlsBasketball.com is exposure.

Playing in the league also means having their scoring stats listed weekly on GirlsBasketballExposure.com and MemphisGirlsBasketball.com. I write weekly recaps about the games and players and list on GirlsBasketballExposure.com and MemphisGirlsBasketball.com.

Like I said that is one example of how exposure works. Another example is college coaches attending the league in person to evaluate the players.

Exposure happens over a period of time. The younger the players start participating in my or any other exposure event the more opportunities they have to display their talents and growth as a player.

Check out the 2013 Fall Exposure League Week 1 Recap II.
